Chapter 12: Preparation

Valeria was in fact not there when I woke up having been called to a preparation meeting earlier in the morning to prepare for the special guest. Today's the day I've been waiting for. Everything rides on how today goes for me. I lay in her bed contemplating how to move forward from here.

I know the room, I just need to figure out how to execute my mission without dying in the process. Valeria's men will likely be stationed all over the place and I'll probably be kept in this room after yesterday's fiasco. I could slowly make my way in by taking out the guards one by one. I'm sure Valeria has a no killing policy on me, but that doesn't mean they wont hurt me.

I contemplate for awhile until there's a knock on the door and someone walks in and leaves breakfast on a plate on the dresser for me. I get up and eat without a word, mind still plotting my plan when I come up with something that might work.

If I can get my hands on a uniform again then maybe I can sneak into the meeting as a guard and they'll give me a gun so I can take care of the job. Only problem is... how to get a uniform without alerting anyone. Especially Valeria.

Just at the moment she walks into the room, speak of the devil.

"Ah, you're up. How are you feeling, Princesa?"

"Fine of course."

She stops to stare at me for a long uncomfortable minute, observing and examining everything from the way I stand to the rise and fall of my chest as I breath. The air still feels charged with something when we are together, especially when we are alone.

Valeria walks closer to me and reaches out to put a loose strand of hair behind my ear. It's odd seeing how gentle she can be after being so rough with me just last night, but for once I make no comment.

"Are you going to behave for me today?"

I say nothing and we both stare at each other. I get the feeling that both know the answer to that question. After a moment Valeria sighs and then steps back.

"I'll be busy this evening and I expect you to be on your best behavior while I'm gone. You will stay in here and food will be brought to you, am I clear?"

I nod knowing damn well I'll be doing anything but that tonight. If Valeria suspects something she doesn't say.

There's something weird about this moment we're sharing together. It feels like something big is gonna change and nothing is going to stop it. I find myself contemplating my life before I came to Las Almas. Before Valeria.

I've never felt a spark like this before. It gives me energy even though most of it is used to argue. I know she can feel it too. I wonder how things would be if I really was a normal person. If I met Valeria in a different life, would it be the same?

"Good." Valeria says with a nod.

She moves into my space and kisses me. Not rough or demanding like it usually is, but firm and sweet. The way you'd kiss a lover. I don't move away and I actually find myself responding to the kiss. Suddenly the kiss takes a turn and intensifies with Valeria grabbing my waist and pulling me closer to her. I end up wrapping my arms around her neck subconsciously. Then just as things were getting good there's a knock on the door.

"Boss, we need to get ready." says one of her men.

"I'll be out in a moment."

She sighs before letting me go.

"We will continue this later, Cariño."

I blink and then remember myself and take a step back and shake my head to clear my thoughts.

"I have no clue what you're talking about."

"Of course you don't."

I look at Valeria and catch the look of disappointment in her eyes. For some reason the thought that I disappointed her makes my chest feel tight. I've never disappointed. I'm the greatest assassin around... so why? Why does she look at me like that?

She turns to leave and I watch her go, tight feeling remaining in my chest. Just before she exits I call out to her.

"Valeria."

She pauses and turns to look at me.

"Yes, Princesa?"

I war with my thoughts. I don't even know why I called out to her and now I'm standing here like an idiot with nothing to say.

"Nevermind."

She stares for a moment longer before nodding and turning away walking out and closing the door behind her.

Fuck. What am I doing? I need to focus I think as I pace in the room. I'm not going to let my reputation go down the drain just because I... I what? I don't even know. Or maybe I do, but I'm too afraid to admit it.

I spend the rest of the day waiting for the right moment to act. My chance comes around later in the evening when they bring me my meal. I manage to catch a glimpse of the hall and find it surprisingly clear except for one guard stationed at my door. I eat my food in peace pretending that nothing is wrong before throwing the dish on the ground making it break and screaming.

Just as I expected, the guard comes rushing in looking for the reason I screamed, gun at the ready. He didn't notice me behind the door, and with his back turned I make a swift chop to his neck and he crumbles to the floor. I take his clothes and mask and grab the gun before heading out in search of the room the I know the meeting will take place in.

It's not long before I see it swarming with other guards, but the door is open meaning my target hasn't arrived yet. I slip inside under the guise of standing guard by the door and no one seems to bat an eye. I see Valeria sitting at the head of the table looking like she's contemplating something difficult. Then she calls a guard over and whispers into his ear something and he then leaves and heads off somewhere else in the mansion.

Not long after that the notice is given that the vipers have arrived and are coming to the room. Everyone gets into position and stands on guard and at the ready. When they enter their leader, my target, at the head enters a cocky look on his face. He takes a seat across from Valeria, a few feet away from me. I could do it right now.

Just as they begin to exchange pleasantries the guard from before open the door and rushes over to Valeria whispering something in her ear that makes her eyes widen and then she looks around the room before stopping right on me.

I grin. I made sure to look like I belonged in the room, but I assume there's a set number of people that supposed to be in here and Valeria being the smart woman she is would remember everyone of those people and would notice if there was an extra, aka me. She stares for a long moment and I stare back.

Right before she speaks, I aim my gun towards the rival leader and shoot.
