Viktor sat in the passenger seat, his mind racing as the car sped down the winding, snow-covered road. His foot tapped restlessly against the floor, unable to contain the tension building inside him. He kept his eyes trained on the road ahead, but his thoughts were miles away—focused entirely on Marlee. Every second that passed, every inch of snow-covered ground they sped over, felt like time slipping through his fingers. If they were too late... he couldn't allow himself to finish the thought.

Beside him, Maxim gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles had turned white, his face a mask of concentration. The tires struggled for traction on the icy road, sliding dangerously with every turn. Viktor's jaw clenched, and he swallowed the lump of dread that had settled in his throat. He wasn't used to this kind of fear—the kind that seeped into your bones and refused to let go. The stakes had always been high in his line of work, but this was different. This was Marlee.

The cold Russian night pressed in on them, the snow falling heavier, turning the road into a treacherous path. Maxim didn't speak, but Viktor didn't need words. They both knew what was at risk. The car's engine growled, pushing forward with every ounce of power it had left, but it wasn't fast enough for Viktor. Nothing would be fast enough until he had Marlee back in his arms.

His phone buzzed on the dashboard, pulling him out of his thoughts. It was another update from his men tracking the car ahead of them. Viktor glanced at the screen, jaw tightening as he read the brief message. They were closing in, but not fast enough.

"Faster," Viktor muttered, the urgency creeping into his voice despite the calm he tried to project. Maxim didn't respond but pressed his foot harder on the gas. The car lurched forward, tires spinning slightly before finding grip again. The headlights of the car in front of them flickered in the distance, barely visible through the snowfall.

Viktor's hand clenched into a fist. His thoughts flickered back to the last time he saw Marlee, the softness in her eyes, the way her smile had lit up the room. Now, she was somewhere up ahead, terrified, cold, in danger. His heart raced, the anger and helplessness boiling inside him. He had never felt so powerless, and it was driving him to the brink.

Suddenly, the car ahead of them swerved, the tires catching on something Viktor couldn't see. His breath caught as he watched it spin out of control, skidding dangerously close to the edge of the road. Everything seemed to slow down. No, no, no...

The car in front of them hit the embankment hard, flipping violently through the air. Viktor's heart stopped as he watched the crash unfold. His breath was frozen in his chest as the vehicle tumbled over and over before finally landing upside down in the snow.

Maxim slammed on the brakes, their car screeching to a halt just a few yards away from the wreckage. Viktor was out of the car before it had fully stopped, the freezing wind biting at his skin as he sprinted toward the wreck. His heart pounded in his ears, his legs moving on instinct alone.

"Marlee!" Viktor shouted, his voice raw and desperate as he scanned the scene. The snow was thick, and the car lay on its roof, the glass shattered, metal twisted and groaning from the impact. Panic clawed at Viktor's chest, and he fought to keep it down. She has to be alive. She has to be.

Maxim was right behind him, gun drawn as they approached the wreck. But Viktor's focus was on one thing—Marlee. His eyes darted across the snow, searching for any sign of her. Then, through the haze of falling snow, he saw movement.

The moment Viktor saw the cold glint of the gun pressed against Marlee's temple, a surge of fury so intense it nearly blinded him rushed through his veins. His pulse thundered in his ears, and all he could focus on was her—Marlee, pale and trembling, her wide eyes locked onto his as if he were her only tether to this world.

Every muscle in his body coiled, ready to strike, but he forced himself to hold steady. One wrong move, one misstep, and Russo could pull the trigger, ending everything in a heartbeat. Viktor's jaw clenched as he held Russo's gaze, his hand tightening on the grip of his own gun.

"Russo," Viktor said again, his voice a deadly calm. "Let her go."

For a split second, there was silence, the world frozen as snowflakes drifted between them. The air was thick with tension, as if the entire landscape was holding its breath, waiting for someone to break the fragile stillness.
