Chapter 8

No One P.O.V

"Wahh!" Young Kanto cries.

"What's wrong?" Young Laito asks, trying to comfort his brother.

"The bats I just caught got away!" Kanato continues to cry.

"Don't cry, Kanato. We can catch them again."

"Yeah, stop your sniveling! I'll catch 'em for you!" Young Ayato says proudly, before he and Laito run to catch the bats.

Yui then sees the purpled haired woman she saw outside her window walk up to the young triplets. She grabs Ayato's arm tightly, causing him to whine.

"You're going back inside to study."

"N-No way! All I've done is study!" Young Ayato says, trying desperately to stand up for himself.

"I don't want any excuses. Return to your room."

"How come Kanato and Laito get to play while all I ever get to do is study?"

"Because you're not like other children."

"No! I wanna play more!"

"How many times must I tell you?! You are the successor."

"I don't want to be the successor! Mei is!"

"No! You will! Now, do you understand what that means? Tell me what you must do."

"I must become number one... I must become better than anyone..."

"And if you fail?"

"I am not my mother's child, so I will be sunk to the bottom of the lake?"

"Exactly, good boy! You are worthless to me unless you are number one. Worthless boys must spend eternity at the cold, damp bottom of the lake, all alone where no one can help them. Unless that's what you want, go to your room."

Ayato cries as he runs away and goes back to his room. Yui watches in shock, not understanding how a mother could talk to their child like that. Yui looks around wondering where Mei was. If she was here, there's no way that mother would get away with that. Mei would slaughter the woman.

Time skips ahead and the woman is now sitting on the bend outside, and young Kanto runs up to his mother.

"Mother?"

"Kanato, my little songbird, sing. Sing that song for me."

"Yes, Mother."

Bark! Bark! Bark!

"Haha! Good boy!"

Yui watches as a young Reiji and a woman are sitting under a gazebo with a butler standing watch. Reiji is reading, the woman is working on an embroidery, while young Shu is playing with a puppy.

"Shu, what are you doing?" The woman asked, looking disappointed.

"Look, a friend just gave him to me!" Shu said excitedly as the puppy licks his face.

"Release that thing at once."

Shu ignores the woman as the puppy keeps licking his face.

Giggle.

"Shu!" The woman snaps, standing up. "You are the eldest son, and therefore, the next head of the family. You must learn how to conduct yourself at all times."

The butler then walks to Shu and takes the puppy out of his arms.

"Ah! What are you doing?!" Shu cries, reaching for the puppy. "No! I promised Edgar I'd take care of him!"
