Chapter 9

Benjamin Tucker

As we set off down the trail, the rhythm of our horses' hooves and the crisp, fresh air created a sense of freedom and exhilaration. I was eager to see where the day would take us and to discover more about the intriguing woman who had captured my attention in such an unexpected way.

The sun was climbing higher into the sky, casting a warm, golden light over the sprawling ranch as we set out for our trail ride. Georgia and I led our horses down the dirt path that wound through the lush, rolling landscape. Frontier Miracle, or Merry as we knew her, trotted steadily under me, his powerful strides echoing the rhythm of the excitement I felt.

Georgia rode with a graceful ease, her confidence evident in every movement. I couldn't help but admire her as we rode side by side, her hair flowing freely behind her and the sun highlighting her features. We made small talk as we rode, but the conversation was light and easy, punctuated by occasional bursts of laughter.

As we neared a bend in the trail, I caught sight of a figure approaching from the opposite direction. It was Katelyn, riding a striking grey horse. She looked to be enjoying herself, her laughter carrying on the breeze. I couldn't help but notice the way her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she spotted us.

"There's Katelyn!" Georgia called out, raising her hand in greeting.

Katelyn waved back enthusiastically, guiding her horse toward us. "Hey, G! I see you've brought a guest. And a handsome one at that!"

I couldn't help but smile at Katelyn's compliment, though I suspected it was more for show than anything else. "Hello, Miss Katelyn. Nice to see you again. Apologies for the intrusion."

"Nonsense, the more the merrier," Katelyn replied with a wide grin. Her blonde hair caught the light, giving her a glow that matched her playful demeanor. "I've heard a lot about you, Mr. Tucker. It's a pleasure."

"I'm sure all of it was flattering," I said, tipping my hat. "But I wouldn't believe everything you hear."

"Believe me, I won't," Katelyn shot back with a wink. "I'm more interested in seeing if you live up to the reputation."

There was a spark to Katelyn that I couldn't ignore—she was cheeky, quick with a comeback, and there was a lively energy about her that was hard not to find amusing. With her golden hair and that ever-present grin, she was the kind of person who could light up a room. But even as I enjoyed the easy banter, I found myself feeling a bit out of place. I wasn't usually the type to get drawn into silly races or lighthearted challenges, especially not with two young girls. I prided myself on being more grounded, more thoughtful, and to be honest, a bit too serious for this kind of thing-

But then there was Georgia.

She nudged her horse closer to Katelyn's, and I felt that same pull toward her—the one that had been nagging at me since the moment I'd met her. Georgia had a quiet confidence, a depth that set her apart. She wasn't just playful; she was smart, sharp, and had a way of making me want to step outside my comfort zone, to prove myself in ways I wasn't used to. Next to her, Katelyn's youthful exuberance, while charming, seemed lighter, more fleeting.

"I told Mr. Tucker here that we'd have a bit of a race," Georgia said, breaking into my thoughts. "He thinks he can outpace both of us."

Katelyn raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Is that so? I'm all for it. What do you say, Mr. Tucker? Ready to test your mettle against a couple of skilled riders?"

I hesitated for a moment, caught between my usual inclination to stay on the sidelines and the unfamiliar but growing desire to dive into whatever this was. It wasn't like me to get involved in something so frivolous, but then again, I wasn't used to feeling this way—this urge to be part of the fun, to impress someone like Georgia, even if it meant stepping out of my usual role.
