My Younger Brother Returned
Seo Jae-ha and Seo Jae-yoon, three years apart, were common brothers you could see anywhere. If there was something slightly different, it was that they came from a remarried family, but that wasn't unusual in today's world.
After years of living together under one roof, they became a normal family in the eyes of others. Instead of the occasional greetings, they exchanged insults, and the lack of contact was considered good news—a typical sibling relationship.
“You little punk, did you die somewhere?”
Jae-ha was debating whether to send a message asking if Jae-yoon was dead since he had been away without contact for five days. But he decided it was pointless and put down his phone. It was better to leave his brother alone, who might just be going through a late rebellious phase.
*Ding dong. Ding dong.*
Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and Jae-ha quickly checked the time.
“Who the hell is ringing the doorbell at this hour?”
The persistent ringing of the doorbell, at one-minute intervals, was hard to ignore. Jae-ha threw aside the game he was playing and went to check who it was, thinking he would at least see the face of the crazy person disturbing his night.
On the tiny screen, the crazy person was Seo Jae-yoon—his younger brother. And to top it off, he was soaking wet, making Jae-ha not want to open the door at all.
“You punk, how much did you drink to forget the door code and start ringing the bell?”
“Hyung…”
Despite being gone for five days without a word—whether it was running away or just an extended outing—Jae-yoon had not contacted him once. Jae-ha had expected him to barge in shamelessly, but Jae-yoon's voice was strangely low and cracked.
His brother's voice was so serious, almost on the verge of tears, that it made Jae-ha's heart sink to the floor.
Hearing 'hyung' after such a long time, Jae-ha wondered if Jae-yoon had drowned in alcohol, but when he sniffed, there was no smell of alcohol—only a metallic scent.
Instead of mocking his soaked brother, Jae-ha began to look him over with concern. Throughout the inspection, Jae-yoon stared gloomily at him.
Curious why his brother was acting so unlike himself, Jae-ha asked bluntly, "Did you get into trouble?"
“The trouble… Hyung, it was you who got into trouble.”
Jae-ha, confused by the unexpected response, had a sudden realization.
“What are you talking about? Did you fall for a voice phishing scam or something?”
“I’m sorry, hyung.”
“What? How much money did you lose for you to be saying sorry to me?”
“Hyung, I’ll make it up to you. I’ll make it up…”
Even though it was his own business, why was he apologizing? Jae-ha, still puzzled, quickly checked his phone, suddenly startled.
“Hey, you crazy bastard. Did you mess with my bank account too? How did you know my password?”
He hurriedly opened the banking app to check his account balance. Fortunately, the small amount of savings remained untouched, and Jae-ha sighed in relief. But then, a soaking wet body embraced him.
‘This bastard, unless he drank himself silly, he wouldn't be acting like this.’
It was the first hug they’d had in six months since the day they had a big fight over a chicken drumstick and were forced into a handshake by their parents. The situation was awkward, and the smell of wet clothes and a metallic odor from Jae-yoon was overwhelming. Jae-ha wanted to push him away but felt uneasy in the serious atmosphere, so he just fidgeted.
