The following weeks brought more whispers and unease. Eliot noticed subtle changes in the town. People seemed more distant—conversations more guarded. The library, once a place of comfort, now felt like cold walls closing in with every new piece of unsettling news.
One day, Eliot found herself in a conversation with Mrs. Jenkins, the town’s elderly handyman.
"Mrs. Jenkins, have you heard anything about Mark?" Eliot asked, trying to keep their voice steady.
Mrs. Jenkins looked up from her crossword puzzle, her expression hard to read. "Heard a few things. Some folks say they saw him around the old cemetery. Not that it means anything. Just old gossip."
"The cemetery?" Eliot repeated, a shiver running down their spine.
"That place is abandoned," Mrs. Jenkins nodded. "A lot of folks avoid it. Too many stories about it being haunted—or worse."
Eliot's mind raced. "Thanks for the info, Mrs. Jenkins. I’ll check it out."
