There is no proper way to start this story.
If I begin with "once upon a time," my audience would likely get angry at me for giving the false impression that this tale is as pretty as it sounds. Believe me, no one will put down this book as the same person they were when they picked it up.
However, if I started with something like "there is no such thing as hope in this story," that wouldn't be right, either. There is lots of hope in this story, and often, it is the only thing that keeps the pages turning. No matter how deep the waters, the light of the sun shining through the surface keeps this story from sinking to the bottom.
No, there is no right way to begin this tale. This is a story of fierce love and great loss, of crushing despair and fleeting hope. These pages are heavy-laden with pain, suffering, and fear. Each new moment brings sorrow; yet joy, peace, and love prevail. Bonds are made and broken, family is lost and found.
Indeed, this is a story that will change you forever. Those kinds of stories never get the beginnings they deserve.
But I suppose I must start somewhere. Shall we begin?
