"time moved too fast, you play it back"

"you're mason thames," i say like an idiot, staring at him with my mouth hanging open.

"thank you," he saying, laughing, and i can feel the flush rising to my cheeks.

"i'm so sorry i didn't even notice!"

"no, no don't apologize, i actually like it when people don't recognize me," he shrugs.

"well, i'll pretend i didn't recognize you," i grin. he chuckles and raises his eyebrows as if he's assessing me. i raise one eyebrow right back at him.

"out of curiosity though, have you watched my movies?" he asks, running a hand through his hair. just when i thought he couldn't get any cuter.

"i have no clue who you are though," i reminded him.

"right. you know that kid who played benj in incoming? isn't he just the greatest most handsome guys you've ever seen?" i snort then give him a side eye and try to act confused.

"i've never heard of that. what movie? is it like a c grade movie?"

"ouch," he laughs, trying to give me a glare but we just start cackling until the person in front of us turns around and we're forced to shut up.

"okay, but unfortunately i really have not seen incoming," i admitted, covering my face with my hands. some fan i am.

"what about black phone?"

"no," i say sheepishly.

"no way, why?"

"um, i can't do horror," i say quietly. "like, i mean i will actually not be able to sleep for the rest of my life."

"no freaking way dude," mason laughs as i cross my arms and frown.

"yes way. actually wait i've watched the village!" i correct, a satisfied smirk on my face. "bet you haven't watched that."

"m. night shyamalan's the village? i have," he counters.

"your lying, nobody's watched that!"

"i mean, i am a horror enthusiast so," he says, making jazz hands.

"wow so unique, so quirky!" i say sarcastically. he pretends to pout and then taps on walker's shoulder who's sitting right next to him.

"hey walker, this girl hasn't-" he stop and faces me a somewhat apologetic look. "wait what's your name?"

"ouch, we've known each other for so long and you didn't even ask," i sigh, shaking my head in disappoint.

"my bad i guess it just kind of slipped my mind," he shrugs.

"y/n," i laugh. he looks at me for a moment, his eyes locking with mine and i'm filled with a feeling i can't describe but i never want to stop feeling it. he clears his throat and smile.

"that's a very pretty name," he smiles. pretty. he called my name pretty. not nice, not cool, not good but pretty. i can feel the blush rising to my cheeks so i reach to grab something from my bag to hide it.

"what are you reading?" mason asks, angling his head to see the book cover. i have no idea why he keeps talking to me. not that i don't like it, but i'm not used to the attention from cute boys, or boys at all really.

"oh, it's cruel prince, i'm re-reading," i say proudly.

"sound interesting!"

"so you haven't read it?" i ask. he shakes his head.

"i'm not much of a reader," he admits.

"trust me, that's what everybody says until they find a book that they fall in love with."

"what book was that for you?" i give him a curious look, almost as if to say why are you so interested in me?

"keeper of the lost cities. it's definitely kind of cringe but despite all the hate it gets, i have a very special place in my heart of it," i say. he laughs and i can't help but wish that i could hear that noise ever single minute of ever single day. i glance at my phone and i swear i twitch, because it's been half an hour and i haven't even felt the movement of the plane. five and a half hours to go! pretty soon, it's four and a half, then three, then two until we land. the impact of the plane hitting the ground makes me stomach churn a little but other than that this flight was smooth. no vomit, no tears, no headache!

"that was a quick six hours," i say cheerfully.

"right? i swear it feels like we got on an hour ago." i turn to face the window and bite my lip. oh my god, mason thames felt like the time passed by super quick because he was sitting next to me and loved talking with me? am i delusional or am i delusional? i stand up, crack my back and see my mom waving. she gives me a thumbs up, asking if i was okay, and i give her a thumbs up back, which is a first. as everyone starts to get off the plane i suddenly realize that i'm probably never going to see mason again, which makes my stomach churn. maybe i really am delusional but i've never enjoyed talking to someone so much. i mean, he made me forget about paul for six whole hours, so something must've gone right. i meet up with my mom at the front of the plane and she pulls me into a hug.

"i'm so happy that the flight went okay for you," she says, hugging me a second time.

"i bet those breathing techniques helped didn't they?" paul asks.

"no they didn't, actually. a guy next to me showed me box breathing which helped more," i say wryly. paul and his stupid breathing techniques actually made me flight worse, but of course i don't say that out loud. we go through the airport, get our check in bag and make our way outside, where our shuttle is going to pick us up. the whole time the only thing going around in my head is mason, mason, mason. i'm not going to see him again. mason, mason, mason. even luke's complaining voice is drowned out by my raging thoughts. we get to our hotel which is really fancy thanks to paul and his rewards. i sit on the blue fuzzy couch in the reception room while my mom and paul check in. i scroll on my phone a little bit but then lean my head back and close my eyes. i wish mason was here. he would make this vacation so much more bearable, maybe even enjoyable. i sigh then hear someone call my name.

"y/n?" as if right on cue, as if straight from my imagination, from my most deepest desire, mason is in front of me. i do a double-take, and tilt my head trying to figure out what in the superpowers just happened.

"mason?"

"the one and only," he says, taking a bow.

i could jump up and cheer right now, but instead i try to look happy, but not too happy, and ask, "what are you doing here?"

"this is the hotel we're staying at!" he grins and gestures to leena, brooke and walker, who are also checking in at the counter.

"ok eat! how long are you gonna be here for?"

"a week, you?"

"same!" i smile at him and he makes eye contact with me again, making my heart race and my brain turn into mush.

"mase come on! we're checked in," brooke says, waving the card around. she sees me and gives me a wave and i wave back. i should definitely talk to her sometime.

"alright, see you around? i hope your going to the waterpark because i heard it's pretty fire," he says.

"yes," i say quietly and then nod to make sure he got it. he gives another one of his smiles, one i know i'll be dreaming about, and walks away. i let out a breath i didn't know i was holding and close my eyes. this vacation was definitely not going to be boring.
