The morning light filtered through the blinds, casting thin stripes across the room. Mia stirred on the couch, her mind groggy from a night of restless sleep. Emily was still asleep in the chair beside her, her face peaceful in the early dawn. But Mia's heart sank as she remembered why she was here.
She reached for her phone, half-expecting another message to appear. The screen was blank, offering no new horrors, but the unease didn't fade. She quietly slipped off the couch, careful not to wake Emily, and headed to the small kitchen. As she filled a glass with water, her thoughts raced back to the events of the night before.
Who was doing this? Why were they targeting her? Mia's thoughts spiraled, grasping at anything that might explain the sudden terror invading her life.
She opened her phone again, scrolling through her contacts, searching for someone else she could trust. Her finger hovered over her brother's name—Jake. He was tough, protective, the kind of person who wouldn't take this lightly. But Mia hesitated. Jake lived in another city, and she didn't want to drag him into this without a clear plan.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock at the door. Mia froze, her heart lurching into her throat. Emily stirred in her sleep, but didn't wake. The knock came again, louder this time, insistent.
Mia set down the glass, her hands trembling as she approached the door. She peeked through the peephole, her breath catching as she saw a man standing outside. He was tall, dressed in a black coat, his face obscured by the shadow of the hallway.
Her mind raced. Was this the person who had been tormenting her? But as she hesitated, the man spoke, his voice muffled but clear enough to reach her through the door.
"Mia, I'm Jake. Emily called me."
Relief flooded through her, mingling with a fresh wave of anxiety. She quickly unlocked the door, swinging it open to reveal her brother standing there, concern etched across his face.
"Jake, thank God you're here," she whispered, pulling him inside.
He enveloped her in a tight hug, his grip firm and reassuring. "Mia, what the hell is going on? Emily said you were in trouble. Who's after you?"
Mia pulled away, glancing back at the sleeping Emily before leading Jake into the kitchen. "I don't know. Someone's been sending me these messages, saying they can see me, that I can't hide. It's like they're always one step ahead."
Jake's expression hardened. "Show me the messages."
Mia handed him her phone, and Jake scrolled through the texts, his jaw tightening with each word he read. "This is messed up. Have you noticed anyone following you? Any strangers hanging around your place?"
Mia shook her head. "No one. It's like they're invisible, but they know everything I do."
Jake glanced at the door, his mind already working on a plan. "We're going to the police again, but this time, I'm staying with you. They won't be able to mess with you if I'm around."
Mia nodded, feeling a bit of hope return. Jake was always the one to take charge, to make things right. If anyone could protect her, it was him.
But as they discussed their next steps, Mia couldn't help but glance at her phone again, half-expecting another message to disrupt their plans. Because deep down, she knew that whoever was behind this wasn't going to give up so easily. And this time, they might come after not just her, but the people she loved.
