Cassie's Pov

The groans were loud and obnoxious as our History teacher gave us our assignment. We were to find a 'ancient' artifact and write an essay on it. Simple enough I would guess, I would just swing by my grandmother's antique store on the way home.

"I think I'll just grab something random in my attic and call it square," my friend Rosa whispered to me. I rolled my eyes at her.

"Why don't you just come with me to my grandmother's shop," I insist.

She raises an eyebrow, brushing back her brunette hair behind her ear. "Old McCarthy's? Are you mad?" She whispers furiously.

I gave her a strange look, "is that what they call her old shop these days? My god..." I mumble just as the bell rings.

She simply shrugs her shoulders as we pack up and part ways, her heading to her final class while I head to mine.

Math... how lovely.

We had two types of Math classes, a regular one and... the sped one it's called. When I first found out I was in it in my first year of high school I'm ashamed to say I cried. I felt embarrassed to say the least, thank the lord my parents have never figured it out. They'd be furious.

But it's mostly myself to blame. I had told my previous math teacher one too many details of how I didn't get much of a math education while in elementary since I had to teach myself.

A snap of fingers in my face brought me out of my thoughts. "You alright, Cassie?"

I felt my face heat up as soon as I snapped out my thoughts, people staring as I stood awkwardly in the middle of the hallway. I try an attempt at a smile.

"Yes, I'm fine." I say and brush past the para, I wasn't surprised he stopped me. He was almost the security guard of our small school, trying to keep everyone in check.

I quickly make my way to my lockers, ignoring peoples small comments. They weren't ones I wasn't used to.

I took a swig from my water bottle–totally had water in it as well. To the rest of the day.

The soft chime of bells sang as I walked into my grandmother's shop.

"Grandmother?" I called, "It's me."

"Whose me?" I heard her soft voice somewhere far off in the back.

I chuckle. "Cassie." I say and go further into the shop, briefly sifting through the shelves.

A slight ruckus came from the backroom before I saw her small frail body come through the curtain. "Ah, isn't my favorite little one." She says softly.

She wasn't my actual grandmother, no that lady was a hag and a half. I had stumbled upon her shops from a dare back in middle school and she offered me cookies. She'd been my comfort, my person ever since.

I walk over to her and kiss her cheek. "How are you, grandmother?"

"Oh the old bones are more sore than usual but other than that I'd say I'm going along just fine." She smiles before going over to her counter. "Are you hungry? I have some brownies if you'd like."

Normally, I'd never allow myself such a treat. Especially in public. But... who could resist brownies? Honestly? "I'd love some."

She smiled warmly and passed me a large chuck of one and I quickly started munching on it. "I need an 'ancient' artifact of sorts grandmother, for my history class. I have to find one and write an essay about its history."
