Zero-year age gap (|6-6|); M/F; Love+Lust; 5,011 AS (before The Dragonet Prophecy)
To celebrate my first addition in months and months and months, this one had a whole lot more work put into it. It is twice as long as many of the others, and was written over the span of a few weeks. Happy reading!
The caverns beneath the mountain were cold and damp, the air thick with the smell of earth and ancient stone. The soft, dim light from the bioluminescent fungi clinging to the walls cast eerie shadows, their faint glow the only source of illumination in the otherwise pitch-black darkness. The silence was punctuated only by the occasional drip of water, the sound echoing off the walls and adding to the oppressive atmosphere.
Sunny had never liked the caves. Despite her cheerful demeanor, the constant darkness and the heavy weight of the mountain above them always made her feel small and insignificant. But tonight, something was different. There was a tension in the air, something she couldn't quite put her claw on. She had noticed it in Clay as well — the way he had been quieter than usual, his eyes darting around as if searching for something. Or maybe someone.
They had been alone together before, of course. The five dragonets had spent most of their lives in these caves, their only company being each other and the occasional visit from the guardians. But this was the first time Sunny had felt this kind of awareness of Clay. It was like a slow burn in her chest, a heat that spread through her body and made her scales feel too tight. She couldn't explain it, but she didn't want to ignore it, either.
Clay was sitting across from her, his massive frame taking up most of the space in the small alcove they had found to rest in. His brown scales seemed to absorb the little light there was, giving him an almost shadowy appearance. Sunny watched as he shifted, his muscles rippling under his skin, the movement sending a strange shiver down her spine. She couldn't help but notice the way his chest rose and fell with each breath, the way his eyes glinted in the dim light as they met hers.
"Are you okay?" she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper. She didn't know why she was whispering; there was no one else around to hear them. But the silence seemed so thick, so heavy, that it felt wrong to break it with anything louder.
Clay hesitated for a moment, his gaze dropping to the ground. "Yeah, I'm fine," he replied, his voice just as soft. But there was something in his tone that made Sunny's heart skip a beat — a roughness, an edge she wasn't used to hearing from him. She wanted to ask him what was wrong, to press him for answers, but she couldn't find the words. Instead, she just stared at him, her mind racing with thoughts she didn't fully understand.
The tension between them grew as the minutes passed, the silence stretching on and on until it felt like a physical presence in the room. Sunny couldn't take it anymore. She needed to do something, anything to break the spell that had fallen over them. Without thinking, she reached out, her claw brushing against Clay's.
It was a small gesture, a simple touch, but it sent a jolt of electricity through her body. She gasped, pulling her claw back as if she had been burned. But the feeling didn't go away. If anything, it intensified, the heat in her chest spreading through her veins, making her feel light-headed and dizzy.
Clay's eyes widened, his breath catching in his throat. He looked at her, really looked at her, for the first time that night. And in that moment, something shifted between them. The air grew thick with unspoken words, with desires they had never dared to acknowledge before. It was like a dam had broken inside her, and all the feelings she had been keeping locked away came rushing to the surface.
"Sunny," Clay murmured, his voice low and rough. He didn't move, didn't pull away from her. Instead, he reached out, his own claw closing around hers, holding her in place. The warmth of his touch sent another shiver down her spine, and she couldn't stop the soft sigh that escaped her lips.
