Growing up in Norfolk definitely had it ups and downs. Whilst it was a beautiful place to live with gorgeous scenery and beaches along the coastline, there wasn't all that much to do. I had been going to school in the countryside for all of my education up until now, at university. There wasn't much keeping me in Norfolk anymore but I decided to stay locally and study at my local university, it was different from any other areas I had studied in. It was a city.
Most certainly a small city but nether less still certainly a city. I'm a politics and International relations student in their first year of university. I worked hard to get here, although I was luckily enough to attend a private boarding school for sixth form it was a scholarship that I worked hard for and I never thought I would be attending university.
I had settled into university nicely, I was in the competitive swimming team after not competing since I was 15 it was a sport I loved. Another sport I lived was Formula 1. I had recently attended the Goodwood festival of speed with my father, I had gifted him the experience for Christmas early as it was his dream to see a F1 car in real life before it was all too late. But that wasn't enough to fusil my petrol filled mind. I fell in love with fast and loud cars going around in circles at a young age.
It was currently a Sunday and I'm sat in my apartment watching the Monaco Grand Prix, certainly one of my favourites as I had fallen deeply in love with Monaco and longed to visit their after the completion of my first year of studies, I had worked tiring hours besides studying to be able to afford a trip there.
I was a typical fan of course, ashamed ti admit it out loud I had messaged a few drivers on instagram thinking delusional that i would receive a response but none had come obviously. I had also put in emails and applications to receive drivers cards, some I had received from smaller teams such as Williams and HAAS, I was like a child at Christmas opening them!
Recently I had written a hand letter to the Mercedes Petronas F1 team in the hopes of receiving a response, especially from George Russell and he was also brought up in Norfolk, I will admit I was never that big of a fan of Hamilton but it was because I liked anyone that was new when I started to watch F1 and what some people would call the underdog.
The Grand Prix had finished and I was stunned, Charles Leclerc had just won his home race after many years of disappointment and heartbreak, I was absolutely thrilled for him. Quickly glancing win at my watch I realised it was time for training, I was already dressed in my swimwear with my dingby and litten shorts that were half pink and half purple and a simple plain white off the shoulder top, I quickly finished my last slice of orange and slipped my swim bag over my shoulder and put my team sliders on ready to head down to the lobby to catch the bus to training.
Before I made my way to the bus station I pondered about checking my postbox, I noticed the key to my post box in my lanyard so I walked over to quickly check and there was to my surprise a letter for me, this wasn't normal as I never really ordered anything and post normally went to my parents house. After grabbing the letter I quickly went to my bus stop and waited for the bus to arrive.
After 10 minuets of waiting and sipping my energy supplement drink I was sat at the top of the double decker bus on my way to training with the letter still in my hands. I slowly began to open the letter and when I opened it I saw two drivers cards, once from Lewis Hamilton and one from George, a smile plastered on my face I inspected them to see if they were hand written signatures or if they were simply printed ones, Lewis's was printed but in closer inspection I could see that George's card was a hand signature
As I go to put them back into the envelope for safe keeping I see an additional piece of paper, I quickly take this out and open it to see a letter.
Dear ....,
Thank you for your continued support for our team, we hope you enjoy these cards we have sent out to you!
We are thrilled to hear that you are interested in a potential career in Formula one in the future, we understand you are still a student but we would like to invite you to apply for an apprenticeship with our team by simply emailing your CV attached to the bottom of this letter and we will make contact with you once we have success received this.
We also received your letter for George and we passed it along to him to read. He has this message for you."Thank you for your letter and continued support for me throughout this season with Mercedes and throughout my time in F1. It's certainly refreshing to read letter like yours and I always live hearing from people who also grew up locally to me, Norfolk is certainly a place I do miss very dearly and has a special part in my heart. I am also very interested to hear about your studies and your passion for politics and international relations, we definitely need more people like you in that area, I wish you the best with your studies! I also wish you the best in your planning of a trip to the beautiful Monaco where you most certainly will fall in love with the city.
As for your sport and competition coming up I am rooting for you and keep up the hard work in your training for nationals i will be keeping an eye out on how your race goes online if I can.
All the best,
GR63"I was speechless, by what he had written in this letter he had clearly read all of mine, and the fact that Mercedes wanted a CV from me also shocked me, I never expected a response maybe just the drivers cards but this was totally beyond that and I was over the moon.
You could certainly say I walked into training with a smile spread across my face and more spring in my step. That was until I left the pool to the changing rooms where my heart then completely stopped all together.
@Georgerussell has started following you.
What in the world was going on?
Hi guys, I'm back! It's been almost 2 years and a lot has changed but I have finally found passion in writing again. This short part may become a series but I am unsure, if you would like this to become its own story then please let me know!!
