You heard the myths about a siren song?"
"What did it feel like?"
"Honestly. Like a drug. It's like something I need."

The moon was full, casting a silvery sheen over the midnight waters of the Pacific. The waves whispered secrets to the shore, secrets that only she could hear. For centuries, the ocean had been her home, her sanctuary, and her prison. Tonight, as she surfaced, the world seemed different-heavy, as if on the brink of something momentous.

Her name was Selene, a name that meant "moon," though she was as unpredictable as the ocean's darkest depths. Her hair, black as the abyss, flowed around her like ink in water, defying the breeze that tousled the waves. But it was her eyes that drew most to her, though they seldom lived to describe them. One eye, a warm chestnut brown, hinted at a human vulnerability, a fleeting connection to the mortal world. The other, a pale, icy blue, was split by a thin scar that ran vertically through it-a mark from another time, a different life.

Selene was a siren, but not like the ones in ancient tales. Those stories were crude approximations of what her kind truly were. She could transform at will, sliding between forms as easily as the tide shifted between high and low. The men who lived by the sea knew her song, though they could never quite remember the melody once they heard it. They only knew the feeling it left behind-the pull to the water, the sweet surrender to the deep.

But Selene was different from her sisters, who reveled in the destruction they wrought. She was independent, fiercely so. The ocean was hers, yes, but she did not belong to it. She belonged to no one.

The night air was crisp, biting at her skin as she pulled herself from the water, the transformation taking hold in a fluid motion. Where her tail had once been, there were now long, slender legs. Her scales retracted, leaving behind smooth skin the color of warm honey. But even in this human form, there was something wild about her, something that could never be tamed.

She stepped onto the sand, the cool grains a stark contrast to the warmth of her bare feet. The moonlight danced on the surface of the water, as if bidding her to return. But Selene ignored it, her focus on the dark silhouette of the forest that loomed ahead. It was rare for her to leave the water for more than a few hours, but tonight was different. She could feel it in her bones, in the very core of her being. Something was calling to her, something more powerful than the ocean's song.

As she walked, her mind drifted back to the last time she had ventured this far from the sea. It had been decades, perhaps even a century. Time flowed differently for her kind, but she remembered that night clearly. The night she had earned the scar.

She had been careless, drawn too close to a village on the coast. She had watched them from the cliffs, their fires flickering like stars in the distance. They had seemed so harmless then, so fragile. But one of them had seen her, had somehow resisted her song. He had been different too-tall, with dark hair and eyes that had seen too much. He had known what she was before she could strike, and in the ensuing struggle, his blade had cut across her eye, marring her perfect visage. She had killed him, of course, but the scar remained, a reminder that even she was not invincible.

Since that night, she had kept her distance from humans, preferring the solitude of the deep. But tonight, something in the air told her she needed to return. Something was waiting for her, and it was time she found out what it was.

As she reached the edge of the forest, the scent of pine and earth filled her lungs, grounding her in a way that the ocean never could. She moved with the grace of a predator, her senses sharp and alert. The forest was alive with the sounds of the night-crickets chirping, owls hooting, the rustle of leaves in the breeze. But beneath it all, there was something else, something she could almost taste on the wind.

She followed it deeper into the woods, her steps soundless on the forest floor. The trees loomed above her, their branches twisting like gnarled fingers, blocking out the moonlight. But Selene didn't need light to see. Her eyes, so different yet both equally keen, pierced through the darkness.

The scent led her to a clearing, a small patch of earth surrounded by towering trees. In the center of the clearing was a pool, its surface still and black, reflecting the night sky. This was no ordinary pool; she could sense the power radiating from it, a power that called to her in a voice older than time itself.

She knelt by the edge, her reflection staring back at her. The scarred eye glimmered faintly, the reminder of a past that she couldn't escape, no matter how far she ran. Slowly, she reached out, her fingers brushing the surface of the water. It was warmer than she expected, almost hot, and as she made contact, the water began to ripple, the reflection distorting.

For a moment, she hesitated. She had faced down countless dangers, had survived longer than most of her kind, yet this... this felt different. This felt like a choice, one that could not be undone. But Selene had never been one to shy away from the unknown. She had always faced it head-on, with a defiant smile and a heart that refused to be tamed.

With a deep breath, she plunged her hand into the water. The ripples grew, spreading outwards until the entire pool was in motion. And then, as quickly as it had begun, it stopped. The water was still once more, but her reflection was gone. In its place was another-a figure, shrouded in darkness, with eyes that burned like coals.

A voice echoed through the clearing, soft yet commanding, and it resonated deep within her.

"Who are you?."

For the first time in centuries, Selene felt a chill run down her spine. But she did not pull away. Instead, she leaned in closer, her eyes narrowing as she studied the figure.

"What are you?" she whispered, her voice steady despite the uncertainty churning within her.

The figure smiled, a slow, knowing smile that sent ripples across the water. "You'll find out soon enough."

And with that, the figure vanished, leaving the pool as still as before. But something had changed-she could feel it. The air was charged with energy, the forest suddenly silent, as if holding its breath.

Selene stood, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't know what she had just witnessed, but she knew one thing for certain: her life, the life she had known for so long, was about to change.

And for the first time in as long as she could remember, Selene felt something she hadn't felt in centuries.

Excitement.

With one last look at the pool, she turned and walked back into the forest, her steps lighter, her mind racing. The night was still young, and the world was waiting. And whatever it had in store for her, she was ready.

Ready to face it head-on, with that same defiant smile and the heart of a siren who had never, and would never, be tamed.
