Wren Riggings

It isn't often that I am shocked by the actions of professors or other students but the moment Moody stepped into class I felt uneasy. My eyes immediately went to Hermione as I knew she was weary of what his presence would bring. I'm not a fan of brow-nosing know it alls, but she's bearable at times and right now it would be nice to have an outside person agree with me.

"Which of you can tell me how many unforgivable curses there are?" His voice bellows and immediately I turn to watch the Gryffindor girl responds.

"You need to know what you're up against and you need to be prepared." He snaps after her informing everyone of there being three.

I know what I'm up against and quite honestly this class won't prepare me. Maybe if I went to Durmstrang and was taught dark arts I'd have a chance at making it to eighteen.

My head turns to Theo who is across the aisle on my left but he doesn't bother to look back at me. He's too engrossed in watching Moody limp around the classroom. I don't blame him. It's not often we have a professor as odd as him. Well Trelawny is also fairly odd, but a different kind of odd.

"Riggings, look at me when I speak." A gruff voice snaps me back into attention and I nod at the one eyed professor.

"Now tell me, what is the first of the three?" He asks looking at the ginger boy at the front of the class.

I don't think Moody would actually perform an unforgiveable curse. Would he?

I'm proven wrong almost immediately as I watch our professor bounce a small creature around from student to student only for Draco to have it flung onto his face.

It honestly serves him right after the attitude he gave me yesterday.

But it shocks me more when Moody starts to use the second curse. That's when Hermione looks at me which makes me instinctively look over at Theo who is already. We both know that at this rate Moody is, without a shadow of a doubt, going to use the final curse.

"Professor, I think we get it." I speak up which earns me more than enough attention. "I mean that in the most respectful way."

"No I don't think you do, Ms. Riggings. Do you need me to remind you of the dark arts that killed your brother?" He snaps and I feel my heart shatter at his words. I immediately focus my eyes down to the desk in front of me to keep me from losing it all.

"Now tell me what the last curse is." He walks up to the desk I share with Hermoine.

I shake my head. I won't do it.

"Then I guess I will just say it myself, it's the killing curse." He steps back and without missing a beat he sets the class into silence with two words. "Avada Kedavra."

I'm not quite sure where Dumbledore is finding these DADA professors, but I think he needs to do a better job vetting them. Only last year our professor was found to be a werewolf and well the one before that was a fraud. At this rate, I have a better shot at learning the dark arts then defending myself against them.

When class has concluded I am the first to clear the room. I have no desire to look at any of my classmates after what Moody said about my brother. I don't even think Theo could talk me off the ledge right now.

My feet continue to carry me around the castle until I come in contact with an unmovable force. I try to redirect myself but a hand snags on my arm causing me to spin. The second I look up I see that the hand belongs to Viktor Krum.

"You're moving quick."

"My apologies, I'll be going." I pull my arm from his grasp but he steps forward, blocking my way to the great hall.

"Would you mind?" He stops me and I take a deep breath to try and calm myself down. I don't know what this man could want from me and I have no desire to find out.

"She does." The voice of a savior joins the conversation. "We will see you around Krum." He guides me away and pulls me into a corner.

"You've never looked so uncomfortable." He teases while finally switching back to his normal friendly demeanor. "Did he say something wrong?"

"No I ran into him." I shake my head. "He just shocked me."

"Well then who said something wrong? You look hurt." His hand reaches up to my face and I feel my hair get pushed back from my eyes.

Cedric Diggory. My golden boy.

"My brother is not going to approve if he sees us like this." I whisper and he shrugs while keeping his hand on my face.

"I don't care, I'm making sure you're alright."

"Moody made us watch him perform the unforgivable." I explain and his face contorts with confusion. "I asked him to stop because I couldn't watch him perform the killing curse. I didn't want to watch him do that and I said it was unnecessary."

"Is that all? Did it just scare you?" His hand travels down to my arm as he continues to look in my eyes.

"He mentioned Jeremy and how the dark arts killed him. He said that it was necessary as a reminder. He said it in front of the whole class and he didn't stop there. He went on to talk about how Potter is the only person to survive it. Cedric he's a monster and I don't know why he's teaching like this."

"I'm sure Dumbledore approved of it for a reason Wren. It should get better from here though, you know, now that you've gotten past the bad part."

"I don't know Cedric, it just feels like a bit too much right now. I have to go back to the common room before things get crazier tonight."

"I'll see you when they announce everything then." He nods and I bite my tongue to keep from expressing my hatred that he will be putting his name in the goblet or fire. "It's going to be done and if it ends up being me I want your support. It means a lot to me."

"Well you mean a lot to me and this stupid tournament puts you in harms way. Cedric I swear if anything happens to you I don't know what I would do." I grab at his hand and he gets shocked my action. I'm never one to go forth with any display of affection.

"How does Theo feel about that?" He asks and I drop my eyes to the floor. "Nothing is going to happen to me Wren, but don't forget. You're with him."

"I should be the one reminding you that I'm with him." I let my hand fall out of his and with that I continue down the hall.

Cedric Diggory is my golden boy but as of late Theodore Nott is the boy always standing in my corner.
