As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a deep blue hue across the sky, Jane stood in the doorway of Adaline's house, the weight of the situation pressing heavily on her. The urgency of the moment began to sink in, and she felt the reality of what was about to happen crash down around her.
"Can we at least have a moment alone?" Jane asked Adaline's father, her voice steady yet pleading. "Just to say goodbye?"
After a moment of hesitation, he sighed, his expression softening slightly. "Fine. One minute." He stepped aside, allowing Jane to move into the living room, where Adaline stood.
"Adaline," Jane breathed, rushing to her side. "I can't believe this is happening."
"I didn't think he would actually go through with it," Adaline whispered, her hands trembling as she continued to pack. "What am I going to do, Jane?"
Jane took a deep breath, trying to stay composed as she grasped Adaline's shoulders. "When are you leaving?" she asked, anxiety tightening in her chest.
Adaline's voice shook as she replied, "In two hours. They're making me leave for the camp at midnight."
Jane felt her heart drop. "Two hours? That's not enough time!"
"Jane, I don't know what to do!" Adaline's eyes glistened with tears, and Jane felt a surge of sadness wash over her.
"Meet me at the willow tree," Jane said urgently, her mind racing. "We can figure something out. I don't want you to go. I'll find a way to get you out of this!"
Adaline nodded, a flicker of hope lighting up her expression. "Okay... the willow tree. I'll meet you there."
With the clock ticking down, Jane pulled Adaline into a tight embrace, holding her close as if trying to shield her from the impending separation. "I'll be waiting for you," she whispered, feeling the warmth of Adaline's presence seep into her very soul.
Tears streamed down Adaline's cheeks as she clung to Jane, the weight of their love and the uncertainty of the future pressing heavily on them both. "I love you, Jane," Adaline said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I love you too," Jane replied, her heart aching. "No matter what happens, we'll find a way."
As the minute drew to a close, Jane reluctantly released her hold on Adaline, knowing that every second counted. "Go now. We'll meet at the willow tree in a bit. Promise me you'll come."
"I promise," Adaline said, her eyes filled with determination as she wiped away her tears.
With one last lingering look, Jane turned and walked toward the door, her heart heavy but filled with fierce hope. The night was dark, but she would wait for Adaline beneath the willow tree, ready to face whatever came next, together.
