first off, i will be labeling this story with a few warnings from the get go. first and foremost, there is an age gap between y/n and joel that is frequently discussed. joel is y/n's parents neighbor and friend, and family friend since childhood, which some people may find alarming, and if you are one of those people, please do not read. the next warnings are discussions of body dysmorphia/low self esteem issues, alcohol, smut, foul language and sexual themes and descriptions of all sorts. read at your own risk.
secondly, i played the games first!!! i fell in love so quickly with every character i met in part 1 and part 2 but joel is just my favorite. the show has been phenomenal so far (im so excited yet TERRIFIED for season 2, considering what we all know that happens in the beginning of pt.2), and pedro and bella are doing an absolute killer job at portraying joel and ellie. so, that leads me to my next point, which is that this book is based off of hbo's version of pre-outbreak joel (looks-wise), but we're gonna rewind a few years because we need to give these mfers a chance before the outbreak lmao.
