Yuuri could still remember the first time he had seen him. He had been skating on the frozen lake near Yuuri's house, using brand-new white, shiny ice skates. He was wearing all white, which made him look like an angel.
He was majestic, just skating and dancing on the ice. He didn't know anyone was watching, and it was as if he had no worries or stress. He just glided, spinning and jumping in ways Yuuri had never seen anyone do before.
As a young boy, Yuuri never imagined he would meet the one. It was a rumor, a folktale told to children as bedtime stories. It wasn't real... yet. When Yuuri came out from behind the trees he had been hiding behind, and he and the boy looked into each other's eyes for the first time, something clicked.
They were only teenagers though, and Yuuri's family and few friends never believed him when he told them about the beautiful boy he had seen dancing in the moonlight. His imagination, they said. He's a dreamer, his mom had nervously explained to guests they had over at the time.
Yuuri didn't understand why they didn't believe him. He had seen the boy with his own two eyes! But the next night, when he returned to the lake, he didn't see him. The clearing was dark, devoid of moonlight. There was no boy, no skates, no stars, no moon. His mystical dancer was gone, and Yuuri hadn't even introduced himself.
His parents seemed to know that he hadn't been able to find the angel boy again, as they gave him pitying looks the next morning. They whispered behind his back, asking each other how best to approach him. Yuuri decided for them and locked himself in his room for the rest of the day. Until, once the moon came out, he left.
He needed to see. He just needed to. The angel had to be real, he just had to. He was the only interesting thing that had ever happened to Yuuri. In the small, remote village he grew up in, nothing ever happened. But while everyone else was content with doing the same things every day, Yuuri wasn't.
He yearned to explore more and see more. But that wasn't in the cards for a simple village boy like Yuuri.
Yuuri peaked out from behind the trees, and couldn't believe his eyes. There his angel was, floating in the air before landing on the ice. He seemed to be magical, the way he twisted and turned his body on the slippery surface. He was wearing an interesting outfit. It seemed to glow, the gems on it glittering in the moonlight.
The stars were bright that night, twinkling beautifully in a dance Yuuri wished he could learn. This time, instead of staying on the sidelines, Yuuri stepped out onto the ice. He didn't have ice skates, but he could glide. And when the angelic boy saw him again, he smiled gently and came over.
One thing that Yuuri knew he would never forget, was the boy's face. His hair was like a halo for his smile, framing it beautifully. His eyes were like the most stunning diamonds Yuuri had ever seen, even the Emperor would be envious of eyes as such. He was unlike anyone Yuuri had ever seen.
He was a mystery, but Yuuri wasn't able to think much further than that before the boy glided up to him. When stopped, he held out a hand- an offering. One Yuuri knew he would never regret taking. There was a glimmer in his eyes when Yuuri gently placed his hand on top of the angel's. A calm washed over Yuuri, and he gripped the boy's hand.
The angel skated backward, pulling Yuuri forward. He smiled, the skin outside his eyes wrinkling. He got pulled into a slow spin. The lake got brighter, the stars pulsing in a song the angel started to dance to, taking Yuuri with him.
His eyes never left Yuuri, and Yuuri knew. They both knew what was happening.
Yuuri closed his eyes, and let himself relax. The wind whistling through the trees, the crickets croaking in the grass, the sound of blades scraping gently on the ice. Yuuri let it all wash over him. It was hours before Yuuri left, exhausted and in need of sleep. The sun would be rising soon, and the angel gave Yuuri a light kiss on the cheek before Yuuri left.
Yuuri only realized later, in the warmth of his bed, that neither Yuuri nor the angelic boy had uttered a word. But it was alright because he hadn't imagined him. He was real, and Yuuri didn't care what everyone else said. He knew he was real, and that was all that mattered.
Even the next day, when his sister and parents stared at him, looking for signs of disappointment. He didn't let anything show. He found his one, and no one could tell him otherwise.
The villagers all stared at him as he walked past- they looked at him with trepidation, unsure of what to do or say. None of them had ever paid him attention before. No one bothered to. But now, because of his Moon Boy, his supposed imagination, people were noticing him.
Yuuri returned to the lake that night, delighted to see the beginnings of snowfall; the ice crystals decorated the chilled air, dancing and spinning with the wind. His angel was there, spinning in place with his eyes closed, getting faster and faster with each turn.
He finished his spin and stood, locking eyes with Yuuri. Like the night before, he skated over and offered his hand. Yuuri didn't hesitate to give him his own. They danced with the snowflakes, the moon a spotlight, illuminating their waltz.
The single nights with Moon Boy turned into a week, which turned into a month. Every day Yuuri would wake later and later, staying up with his angel each night. He didn't need to come into the village every day, not when nothing was there for him. He had Moon Boy, and that was enough for Yuuri.
No one could enchant him like his angel could. Not anymore, not ever. He could see his parents grow more worried, but he didn't care. He only cared for Moon Boy.
Every night was different- whether the angel would just glide with him, or if they would dance in harmony. Every night the wind and the stars create a song just for them, the moonlight illuminating the both of them beautifully. People thought Yuuri had lost his mind, but to him, he had just found it.
His mind, his heart, his everything. That was what Moon Boy was.
One night though, weeks later, was strange. Moon Boy held Yuuri to his chest the entire time, never letting him go. They would stare into each other's eyes, and Yuuri knew what was happening. His angel and he kissed gently, and Yuuri knew the sun would rise soon. But he couldn't bring himself to leave.
Moon Boy seemed to have the same idea, as he smiled, and guided them through one last dance. It was magic, and in the end, Yuuri closed his eyes. He and Moon Boy rested their foreheads together, letting the wind caress their bodies as the stars shone, the snow flurried, and the moon got brighter and brighter.
Yuuri let himself fall limp in Moon Boy's arms, feeling as he laid Yuuri on his back on the ice.
Yuuri opened his eyes and looked up at Moon Boy, his angel. He would be with his angel, in time. He was so close to being with his angel forever...
As the sun rose, Yuuri felt the ice underneath him melt away, cracking under his weight. It seemed like an eternity before the ice broke completely, the only thought in Yuuri's mind was the sight of Moon Boy. His diamond eyes, glowing skin, glittering hair. It was all waiting for him.
The crack resounded through the forest, and Yuuri fell into the ice-cold water. He sunk lower and lower, not fighting as the water filled his lungs. Soon, as if waking up, Yuuri opened his eyes.
He felt different, he felt like he never had before. He didn't even feel the water around him. But soon enough he saw him. His angel. He was floating down to Yuuri, an arm outstretched for him to take. Yuuri did, and let himself be pulled up, out of the water and into the air.
Moon Boy held him tight, his skin warm against Yuuri's. Moon Boy brought them higher and higher, bringing them up to the sky, into the clouds. All Yuuri could feel was happy, smiling at his angel. His angel smiled back and rested their foreheads together once more.
He was finally with his Moon Boy. My angel...
