Shanni awoke the next morning to the gentle sounds of birds chirping and the fresh scent of spring wafting through her open window. A bright smile spread across her face as she stretched, feeling well-rested and eager to start her day. She quickly dressed in a yellow buttoned-up tank top and a white scalloped skirt, an outfit that showed off her figure and complemented her warm brown skin. She finished the look with white sneakers and tied yellow ribbons into her dreadlocks, feeling bright and cheery as she admired her reflection in the small mirror hanging on the wall.
Stepping out of her stone cabin, Shanni felt a wave of hope and possibility wash over her. The sunlight warmed her face, and she took a deep breath, savoring the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers carried by the breeze. For a moment, she stood on her doorstep, contemplating whether to explore the village on her own or find Adeline to start her work. Her thoughts were interrupted when she noticed someone standing by the makeshift mailbox at the edge of her property.
"Hi, Shanni! Mornin'!" called Adeline, her voice bright and cheerful. A look of surprise shot across both their faces, and they laughed together, a shared understanding already forming between them.
"Your timing is uncanny," Adeline added with a soft laugh, brushing her long pink bangs behind her ears. "I was hoping to run into you! I figured you'd be ready to start helping out in Mistria, so I'm here to tell you about our request board. Come with me!"
Shanni followed Adeline into the heart of the village, passing by quaint cottages and small gardens bursting with vibrant spring blooms. The scent of fresh bread from the bakery mingled with the earthy aroma of tilled soil, and Shanni could hear the cheerful chatter of villagers beginning their day. They walked past the general store, where a few villagers were already milling about, chatting and buying their morning supplies. Adeline led her to a large bulletin board next to the store, its surface covered with pinned papers of various sizes and colors.
"As the name suggests, this is our request board," Adeline explained, gesturing to the board. "Villagers post their requests here every day. You'll receive rewards when you complete each request! It's the perfect way to earn money, equipment, and most importantly, renown."
Shanni tilted her head, confusion clear on her face. "Renown? What exactly is that?" she asked, wanting to understand more.
Adeline's eyes lit up as she spoke. "Mistria is just one of the many towns that make up the kingdom of Aldaria. Each town is ranked according to its renown level. Towns with higher rankings gain more popularity and support from the Capital. Our ranking was improving before the earthquake, but since the disaster, we've dropped two entire ranks." Her voice took on a somber note, and she clasped her hands in front of her, looking at Shanni with a hopeful expression. "As the daughter and heiress of Mistria's Baron, it's my highest priority to fix this. With your help, we can repair the damage from the earthquake, raise our renown, and put this village back on the map."
Shanni nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "So, how do I start?"
Adeline smiled, pulling a small slip of paper from the board. "I made this request just for you. It's a simple task—just greet the townsfolk and introduce yourself. It's the perfect way to start getting to know everyone."
Shanni took the slip, reading the neat handwriting. "Greet the townsfolk." It was a simple task, yet the thought of meeting everyone filled her with a mix of excitement and nerves.
