The second my father's fist touched my stomach for the hundredth time I knew something had to change. It was then that I made the choice to leave. I called my brother two weeks ago. I begged him to take me away from that place. He hesitated at first but couldn't say no since he ran away a while ago. As long as we are far away and they don't bother with us we're okay.

Now I sit in the passenger seat of a beat up white truck. My brother's eyes are focused on the road as we take a sharp turn onto the exit we need. It isn't long before we reach Forks, Washington. A small community located in an area with a large forest. I watch as we drive by all the small stores, the diner, the school I'll be attending, and houses. My brother managed to rent a small one bedroom house for us. We pull into the driveway. The house is a light blue and the paint is chipped here and there. I'll have to sleep on an air mattress in the living room. I don't mind since this is better than nothing.

We hop outside the truck, grab our backpacks, take the air mattresses, and head inside. He got mailed the key ahead of time since this was short notice. We went from sunny California to rainy Washington. Everything is going to be different here. That's what is important. My brother, Jett takes his things into the bedroom at the end of the hallway. I set my two backpacks down. Both are filled with a four pairs of clothes and essentials. I'll have to purchase new clothes eventually.

I glance at the small living room. It's pale white walls could use a new splatter of paint. We won't have company over or anything. I am Staying in the living room for two reasons. One is to keep an eye on me and the other is due to being opposite sexes. If I get dressed it'll be in the bathroom. I plug the air mattress into the wall and let it inflate. My phone buzzes in my pocket. A notification for my favorite television show pops up. I ignore it. I have no one who'd text or call me other than Jett.

I grew up in a different environment. An inhuman environment. I am a Coyote shifter. Similar to wolves but different and not solely because of what we change into. Our shift is more realistic. We almost look exactly like real coyotes in fur color, size, and shape. The only thing that makes us stick out is our eye color. It ranges from bright colors to black. None of which are typical for coyotes. My pack consisted of our intermediate family. It is genetic and unlike wolves every person gets the gene. The wolves shape shift into giant wolves and seem like werewolves in a way. We shift into almost exact replicas of our animals. For us, the process is more painful compared to other shifters.

My parents are the alphas of the pack. My father is strict and abusive. He rules as a tyrant. I want more out of life. I want to experience a real school not be homeschooled. I want to have friends, see the world, and experience life. Jett came to that conclusion a few years ago then left. Now he's an assistant counselor after getting his bachelor's online. He took a job at the high school I will be attending here. This is an entirely new life starting tomorrow. Jett comes out of his room and informs me that we are going to the local store to pick up pillows, sheets, and comforters.

The downtown area is small with different places sometimes spaced out. The local mom and pop store has a small selection of bedding. I pick out a light blue comforter with matching sheets. It has a cloud pattern on it and is a bit childish. I like it since I was never allowed to have something so cute growing up. Jett picked out plain black ones. The pillows we picked are soft and fluffy. The price wasn't expensive but it wasn't cheap either. Jett came prepared though. He's polite and kind towards the cashier who is asking where we are from and everything. After we pay, we go to the nearby diner. It's small and cozy. All the locals are eating. They glance up at us curiously. I awkwardly smile as we take our seats. The waitress takes our order as she is enchanted by my brother.

"First day of school will be tomorrow." Jett says. "I'll be working there and if you need me don't hesitate."

I nod as our food is placed down. Jett rambles on and on about random things. We don't know how to talk with one another yet. We've only reunited recently and we were never close to begin with. The food is hot and delicious. A few people came up to us asking if we moved here. Jett answered them with nice and short answers. He did it in a way that was kind and would leave a good impression. He's always been great with people. He basically explained that we moved here today and asked what the towns people recommended for stores, groceries, etc. Jett made sure to be inclusive and create a welcoming atmosphere so they accept us immediately. They adored being asked questions. Their excitement shined in their eyes.
