Motor neurone disease (MND) is a rare condition that progressively damages parts of the nervous system. This leads to muscle weakness, often with visible wasting. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common form of MND.
Early symptoms can include:weakness in your ankle or leg – you might trip, or find it harder to climb stairs.slurred speech, which may develop into difficulty swallowing some foods.a weak grip – you might drop things, or find it hard to open jars or do up buttons.muscle cramps and twitches.
The final stages of MND will usually involve gradual weakening of the breathing muscles and increasing sleepiness. This is usually the cause of death, either because of an infection or because the muscles stop working.
