There are two definitions of what a family is, at least according to a dictionary I found in my dads attic.
1.) A group of one or more parents living together with their children as a unit.
2.) All descendants of a common ancestor.
Well, I find that kind of funny really. You know that phrase 'blood runs thicker than water?' Well that isn't the original quote. Do you know what it actually is? The real quote is 'The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.' I'll break down what that means.
The blood of the covenant are people we build connections with, having no relation through blood or marriage. The water of the womb refers to our mothers, the people who raised us and who we share DNA with. So really, the quote means that the bonds we form ourselves are stronger than the bonds of family.
I suppose that's what we are, or at least, that's what we became. It was no easy road, but I wouldn't change it for the world. We started off as a group of complete strangers, brought together by our shitty life choices that landed us in group therapy together. You know what? Everything I've been through is worth it. I would go through it a thousand times again if every time it led me back to them.
