The Grid had become a waking nightmare for Kai. Every corner he turned, every shadow that flickered in his peripheral vision, carried with it the weight of unseen eyes, watching, waiting. It was as though the walls themselves were alive, pressing in on him, suffocating him with the weight of their silent scrutiny. He could feel the tension between him, Flick, and Jax festering, growing like a cancer that threatened to consume them all. But more than that, he could feel the regime's gaze, ever-present, ever-watchful, seeping into his very thoughts, twisting them, warping them into something unrecognizable.

He was starting to lose track of time, of days and nights blurring together in an endless cycle of tasks and trials. But it wasn't just the physical strain that was wearing him down—it was the voice, the insidious voice that had rooted itself in his mind, whispering to him in the quiet moments when he was alone. It was the voice of the doctor, the man who had haunted his dreams and now, his waking moments.

Kai stumbled through the dimly lit corridor, his vision swimming as the walls seemed to close in on him. His head throbbed with a dull ache, the world tilting and shifting as if the very ground beneath his feet was unstable. He reached out, steadying himself against the cold metal wall, his fingers trembling as he tried to gather his thoughts.

"You're stronger than this, Kai." The voice was calm, soothing even, a stark contrast to the chaos that raged within him. "You've always been stronger."

He squeezed his eyes shut, willing the voice to disappear, but it only grew louder, more insistent. The doctor's face swam before him, sharp and clear, as if the man were standing right in front of him. The dark, penetrating eyes that always seemed to see right through him, the thin, tight line of his mouth, the calculating expression that never wavered—he could see it all, as though it were real.

"Why do you resist?" the doctor asked, his voice carrying an edge of disappointment. "You know what you're capable of, what you were meant for. The regime sees it, they see your potential. They've seen it all along."

Kai shook his head, trying to dispel the vision, but it clung to him, wrapping around his mind like a vise. "I don't want this," he whispered, his voice barely audible, his throat tight with fear. "I never asked for this."

The doctor's expression softened, though it still held that cold, clinical detachment that Kai had come to associate with him. "But you have it, Kai. You have the power to change everything. To lead, to shape the future. You're the chosen one."

The words sent a shiver down Kai's spine. Chosen one. It was a term that had been thrown around so casually, so carelessly, by the regime, by the other participants in the Grid. But now, hearing it from the doctor, it carried a different weight, a different meaning. It wasn't just a label—it was a burden, a responsibility that he wasn't sure he could bear.

"I'm not like you," Kai said, his voice trembling with the effort to hold onto his sanity. "I'm not like them. I don't want to be."

The doctor's gaze hardened, his eyes narrowing with something that might have been contempt. "You're weak, Kai. You've always been weak. You cling to these... these delusions of morality, of right and wrong, as if they mean anything in this world. But they don't. Not here. Not in the Grid."

Kai opened his mouth to protest, but the words caught in his throat, strangled by the force of the doctor's presence. He could feel himself slipping, losing his grip on reality as the doctor's words burrowed deeper into his mind, rooting themselves in the darkest corners of his consciousness.

"Look at them," the doctor said, his voice low and commanding. "Flick and Jax. Do you think they would hesitate to betray you? To leave you behind if it meant their own survival? They're not your friends, Kai. They're hindrances. Weak links in a chain that will only drag you down."
