"You were dreaming."
With an exaggerated eye roll, Twilight turned and gave Evie a look. Evie paid no attention and only pulled the car into reverse. "C'mon, Evie. Theory's boring, but not boring enough to actually put me to sleep."
"I dunno," Evie muttered, her face morphed in concentration as she focused on not crashing bumpers as she pulled out of the parking lot. "I've seen you in class, Twi. Not the best student."
"That's beside the point." Twilight reached into her backpack and pulled out her Manifesting notebook. She opened it and showed Evie the most recent page. "C'mon, Evie. Okay, so it might be possible that I dreamt the shadows or whatever the hell they were. But how do you explain this?" A finger thud against the open page. The words 'You are one of us' almost seemed to leap out of the page. "This isn't my writing."
Evie was quick to dismiss the whole thing. "My writing changes depending on my mood. That's gotta be it." She wouldn't even look at the notebook. She wasn't an intrigued with the whole thing as Twilight would have liked.
With a huff of annoyance, Twilight tossed the book to the backseat and scowled as she gazed out the moving car window. The last two periods, history and calculus had almost seemed to speed by. Twilight wasn't able to focus on anything, she half expected the room to become overshadowed and start swirling around again, but nothing weird happened.
As Evie drove through Chosen Grove, Twilight couldn't help but think maybe she was right. Maybe it was a prank or something? She wasn't exactly careful with her school materials. Any number of classmates could have gotten their hands on her notebooks.
Yeah. It gotta be a prank. That makes sense.
A prank and a dream.
Yeah. That's it.
Somehow, despite her reassurances, Twilight couldn't truly convince herself. She was still grumbling silently when Evie turned into a driveway and pulled the car to a sudden stop.
Leaving her backpack slouched against the headboard of the car, Twilight quickly followed Evie towards the small brown and white painted Tudor house. Evie quickly slid inside, slipping off her shoes in the hallway as Twilight struggled out of her coat, wrapping her scarf around the coat rack.
"I'm hungry," Twilight announced, heading towards the kitchen without a second glance at her friend.
With a laugh, Evie followed her. "You're always hungry, Twilight."
Twilight pulled open the pantry and started searching the shelves. After a moment, she came away victorious with two bags of cookies. "Plain or chocolate-ship?"
Evie raised her eyebrows as she opened the fridge. "Is that even a question?"
"True." Twilight tossed the plain cookies back into the pantry and sealed the door again. As she poured the cookies into a clear bowl, Evie came to the counter with two soda cans.
Twilight made a face, but reluctantly accepted the offered soda can.
"Don't complain," Evie said. "Soda is soda."
Twilight simply had to disagree. "Sugar-free soda isn't soda. You got anything else?"
With a small smile, Evie cracked open her can and took a sip. "Flavoured water?"
Twilight shuddered at the thought. While she loved having a sugar fix, flavoured water should never touch her tongue. It wasn't worth it. "Sugar-free crap is better than that."
