The night was young as the moon shined bright on the coastal city of Mona. As I began my way home, my heavy work boots on the cobblestone path created an intimidating echo down the alleyway and into a crowd-filled street. The sound of chattering assumptions and questioning filled the air. As I walked into the open, I saw a medical wagon with a lifeless body next to it. The medical officers just arrived at the scene as the law enforcement officers were trying their hardest to pacify the crowd, as their chattering slowly turned into vengeful chanting.
"How many is this now?"
An old man stepped forward to make his presence known.
"Enough is enough we can't allow this murderer to continue his bloody rampage while we all coward in our homes."
The crowd agree as their words grow in intensity. An officer raised her hands to gather attention.
"I understand your worries, anger, and thirst for justice but please go home and go about your night. We have our leading detective focusing his effort to these situations and that is all I can say for now, trust me when I say that we are working day after day to make sure it does not happen again."
The crowd looked at each other knowing that, until either they or the law enforcement officers found the killer there was nothing to be done. So, the townsfolk slowly began to leave the scene and try to go about their night like nothing happened. I moved closer to the wagon and through the dissipating crowd to look upon the scene myself. As I move closer, I was able to see that it was a woman, the pearl white sheet that has been used to cover the body is soaked in blood. The metallic stench filled the surrounding air as the medical officers moved the corpse onto a stretcher. Yet when the two men lift the corpse into the wagon, the sheet covering the woman slide just enough to show her face. She was a young beautiful lady with brown hair that had waves like the ocean, smooth, skin with deep blue eyes, but her mouth was smashed in. With the combination of the crushed lower jaw, the bright red of both the blood and her lips, all with the mouth caving inward towards the throat resemble that of a crushed watermelon after a heavy rock was slammed down upon it. I stared more at the body as a thought was clawing at the back of my mind. A thought I did not wish to entertain, a thought that the corpse in front of me was the woman I saw in my dream late last night. I could feel a tight knot forming in my stomach, I could feel my dinner crawling up my, throat demanding to, be free but I swallowed forcing this feeling back down, to bury it deep
"Oh Mr. Beck umm sorry you must see this."
I did not realize it, but it was one of the more experienced law enforcers. I turned to face him I am sure he saw how pale I was. "You okay Mr. Beck you look whiter than the snow and that's a hard thing to achieve for someone like yourself." He chuckled as he tried to lighten the mood.
"Yeah, I am okay... it's just a sight like that towards a beautiful lady, it's like it came out of a bad dream."
I looked back towards the wagon as I continue to speak.
"If this keeps up, you're either going to hear doors locking in, paranoia fever or you all will have a hunt, either way it's not looking too good for the department."
The officer had panic in his words as he opened his mouth.
"Oh, that's not going to happen, your family's generous donations to the department will not be in vain, I guarantee you that."
Of course, the sheriff would say such a thing, he was not worried about the well-being of the town folk but was worried about the money. The money my family gave to the town, to, the law department and all they want is more. They want me to give them more so they can have their fill of greed.
