"You alright there?"
I help up a girl, giving her a smile.
"Damn clicker almost got you, huh?"
I scan the teenager, making sure I can't see any bites, but all I spot is a nasty-looking burn mark on her arm, so I hold my hand out for her to shake, putting my gun away in my holster.
"I'm Koltena, you can call me Kolt. What's your name, missy?"
The girl takes my hand, returning a smile and speaks in a low voice, like she's trying not to draw attention to herself.
"I'm Ellie, thanks for saving my ass back there."
I chuckle, raising an eyebrow at her response. Such a young girl using swears? She's probably alone, then.
"Strong language, Ellie.." I toss her a granola bar from my back pocket, watching her face light up. "It's dangerous to be alone out here, are you traveling with anybody?"
The girl's smile fades, and she glances at the town behind her, "Not right now, no. Are you alone?"
She seems to be trying to hide something.. or someone.
"Yeah, I've been alone for almost 9 years now, hun'. It gets lonely out here. You're welcome to stay with me for a while and wait for these damn blizzards to stop, if you'd like."
I pat the girls arm, walking past her towards the town that she looked at so nervously.
"You've got someone in there, right? I'd imagine with how young you are, they wouldn't want you traveling alone. Let me help you out."
She just stands there for a second, looking between me and the town anxiously, before just nodding and beginning to walk towards the fence line.
I wonder who she's out here risking her life for.
