TWENTY TWENTY-THREE
"Hey how is she?" asked Trevor as Arabella opened the door to let him and Jamie in.
"She's asleep. She's been asleep since 3," replied Arabella as she walked into the kitchen. "I tried waking her up to eat but she didn't want to so I told her leftovers would be in the fridge."
It was 8 pm and Malena was asleep. She has been sleeping since 3 pm and hasn't woken up. This wasn't new to Arabella, she had witnessed Malena fall into this routine many times. Jamie and Trevor have been filled in by Arabella on Malena's behaviors but left the story to Malena to tell.
"I'm going to go check on her," said Jamie as he walked down the hall to Malena's room.
"Hey, she'll be okay."
"I know Trevor." sighed Arabella. "I just I'm worried sometimes. Like I know I have experienced this with her before but it always worries me." Arabella was spiraling from being so worried about Malena. She turned to Trevor and he saw the look in her eyes. Arabella felt hopeless. She had known Malena for the past six years and she still felt like nothing she could do could help her.
Trevor walked over to her and took her in his arms. "Baby it'll be okay. You are doing you're best and Lennie has told you over and over that everything you do is enough. She just needs space." He hated seeing his girlfriend like this. "How about we go to bed? You need sleep." All Arabella could do was nod while Trevor guided them to her room.
Meanwhile, in Malena's room, Jamie was shaking her to wake up. "Lennie you need to eat. Get up please."
"I don't want to Jamie. Just leave me alone," she said shaking her head.
"Fine don't get up but I'm going to stay here with you. We don't have to talk," he told her as he lay beside her. "I get how you feel but just know that we are here for you"
Malena sighed and turned over to hug Jamie. "I know. Thank you for being here. I hate feeling and acting this way. I just get so in my head and it's killing me. I don't want to feel this way." She confessed to Jamie. The only other person she ever told this to was Arabella but with Jamie it was different. In the past year and a half that she's known him, he's become like a brother to her.
"I know Lennie. Take all the time you need but don't shut us out. We want to be there for you but you need to allow us." he said to her as he squeezed her tightly. "Go back to sleep if you want. I'll still be here for a bit" And she did. Malena fell asleep with Jamie's words playing in her mind. She knew she was sabotaging herself and she had to stop it before it became worse.
It was around 3 in the morning when Malena woke up. She laid there and took a deep breath in then kicked off her blanket. As soon as her feet touched the floor she felt horrible. She knew that she wasn't okay and she basically forced all her friends into taking care of her. She wanted to talk to someone but knew all her friends were asleep. When she looked at the time she realized it was around 6 in New Jersey and she contemplated messaging Jack and seeing if he was awake. Fuck it, she thought.
