Chapter I

Ava Sinclair wasn't used to rejection.
She was Westbridge University's queen bee popular, effortlessly beautiful, and never the kind of girl who struggled with anything except for one thing, her grades.

She glared at the crumpled paper in her hand, the bold red "D" mocking her. If she didn't pull her grades up, she'd risk failing the semester. Her professor's words still rang in her ears.

"Ava, this is unacceptable. You're going to need a tutor, or you won't finish this course."

A tutor. The thought made her sick. The idea of anyone knowing that the untouchable Ava Sinclair needed help? Absolutely not. But she didn't have a choice.

Her eyes drifted to the one name the professor had suggested, and she groaned internally.

Nathan Carter. The campus nerd.

Always with his nose buried in some book, always raising his hand in class like he had all the answers. Which, unfortunately, he did. He wasn't just a bookworm, though. Nathan was, frustratingly, handsome but it didn't matter.  His reputation for being a geek overshadowed any good looks he might've had.

Ava wasn't thrilled about the idea of approaching him, but desperate times called for desperate measures.

Nathan was sitting in his usual spot in the library when she found him. He looked up from his laptop as her shadow fell over him.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, surprised. Ava Sinclair had never spoken to him, let alone sought him out.

Ava shifted uncomfortably. "I need a favor."

Nathan raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "You? Need a favor from me?"

Her jaw tightened. "Look, Carter, don't make this harder than it has to be. I need help with the stats class, and you're good at it. The professor said you could tutor me."

Nathan leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. "Why would I help you? You don't even know my name most days."

Ava bit her lip, not used to being turned down. "No one has to know. It's just tutoring, alright? I need to pass, and you're the best option."

He gave a small laugh, shaking his head. "You want me to tutor you, but you don't want people to know you're being tutored by the 'nerd.' Right?"

She opened her mouth to deny it, but nothing came out. He wasn't wrong. Of course she didn't want to be seen with him.

Nathan smirked. "I'm flattered, really, but I'm gonna have to pass. I don't have time for your... whatever this is."

Ava stared at him in disbelief. "Excuse me?"

"I said no."

She glared at him. No one said no to Ava Sinclair. She leaned in, lowering her voice. "Name your price. I'll pay."

Nathan's smirk faded, and his expression turned serious. "I'm not for sale, Sinclair."

She felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment. She spun on her heel and stormed out of the library, his rejection stinging more than it should.
