The weeks seem to blur by. There was no update on Rick's condition. He didn't wake up from the coma or even show any kind of improvement. The doctors are trying everything they can. We're just going to have to give it time, I guess.
I walked up to Lori and Rick's house with a box of donuts and 2 coffees. Carl swung the screen door open with a smile on his little face.
"What are you doing here?"
"I thought I'd bring you and your mom breakfast. I got donuts from your favorite place."
"Thanks," he moved over to the side so I could walk in.
Lori put down her book as I was slipping my shoes off.
"What are you doing here," she asked as she grabbed the box of donuts from me.
"I just wanted to bring you guys breakfast and see how you were. I got coffee for us"
"Well thank you for that."
"I figured we both need it." She hummed in agreement.
Carl bounced from foot to foot as we put everything on the table. As soon as he was handed a plate, he piled two donuts on it. He sat down in the chair and began shoving his face with them. We had light-hearted conversations until Carl left the room. Then, the topic took a little bit of a turn.
Lori didn't say anything for a minute as she looked into her cup.
"Rick and I fought the morning before he left for work. It was over something stupid but I can't help replaying it. Maybe the last thing we did was fight. That is the last memory Rick has of me."
"Rick knows you love him. He knows that you didn't mean anything you said during that fight. I know it's hard but you can't keep thinking about that. It's not going to do you any good. You just have to think about the happy times and how happy you guys are gonna be when he wakes up."
"If he wakes up. With the virus that's going around, who knows what's going to happen. They're building safe places everywhere just in case they don't find a cure. What'll happen then? What'll happen to Rick?"
"I've thought the same thing. I don't know what'll happen to him. I don't even know what'll happen to us. I guess we just have to cross that hurdle when we get there." She nodded as she looked up at me.
A few days after Rick went into a coma, France and almost all of Europe were overrun by a nasty virus. No one knows where the hell it came from or to find a cure. All they know is the symptoms and what the aftermath is.
One night, people started eating each other. A few attacks started but then more and more were reported each day. Whoever was bit by these infected people came down with a fever, and sweats and some had hallucinations. But it was ruled that the fever is the thing that kills.
After you die, something in your head restarts your body. You come back to life but you aren't yourself, at all. You come back only wanting to rip and eat the flesh off of anything that moves. The only way you die, again, is if your brain is damaged. So a gunshot or a knife to the head is your kryptonite.
In France, there was a huge attack that just about shut everything down. People were running for safe zones as they were still being set up. The army had these giant safe zones with food, water, and shelter. It was first come first serve until they're all full. After that, you're on your own.
There have been a few reported cases of bites that were taken care of. Officials said there was nothing to worry about and everything was under control. Of course, not everyone believed that. If they had everything under control then why would they be building safe zones? Everything was very secretive.
