The deeper we ventured, the more oppressive the cave became. The air was thick with mana, buzzing like static in the back of my mind, but it wasn't just that. There was a palpable weight to it—something ancient, heavy, and watching. The deeper we went, the less I could shake the feeling that we weren't just walking into a cave. We were trespassing.

Ren's pace slowed slightly, his face tense and alert. He was good at hiding it, but I could tell he was on edge, too. His earlier bravado had faded after the encounter with the golem. Now, each step felt deliberate, cautious.

"How much further?" I asked, my voice echoing faintly against the stone walls.

Ren glanced at me. "Not much. We're close. The relic chamber should be just ahead."

I nodded, but something still felt off. If this Heartstone was so powerful, why hadn't anyone else taken it yet? And what kind of traps or creatures might be guarding it? The golem was bad enough, but something told me we hadn't seen the worst yet.

We pressed on, the path growing narrower. The rough-hewn stone walls pressed closer together, and strange symbols began to appear—etched into the rock in a language I didn't recognize. They pulsed faintly with an eerie, silver light.

I floated closer to one of the symbols, inspecting it. "What do you make of these?" I asked.

Ren paused beside me, studying the markings. "They're ancient runes, most likely from the time of the Primordial Mages. This entire cave system was probably their domain."

"Primordial Mages?" I echoed. "Sounds ominous."

Ren smirked, though it didn't reach his eyes. "They were the first wielders of true magic in this world—powerful beings who could manipulate mana on a level that even today's top mages can't touch. Their ruins are scattered all over, but most of them have been looted or lost to time."

"And this place?" I pressed. "Why is it still untouched?"

"That's the question, isn't it?" Ren's tone was thoughtful, as if he had been asking himself the same thing. "I think whatever's guarding the Heartstone isn't something most adventurers can deal with."

A chill ran through me, even though I didn't have a physical body that could feel cold. Whatever's guarding it... If the golem was just a warm-up, we were in for a real fight.

As we moved further into the narrow corridor, the symbols grew more frequent, their glow intensifying. The walls pulsed with the rhythm of something deeper, something alive. And then, without warning, the passage opened up into a vast chamber.

I floated into the cavern, my glow dimming as I took in the scene. The ceiling stretched impossibly high, vanishing into shadow, and the walls were lined with more of those strange, glowing runes. In the center of the chamber stood an enormous stone altar, and resting on top of it was the Heartstone.

The relic was... beautiful. It wasn't some jagged rock like I had imagined. It was a crystalline sphere, radiating a soft, pulsating light, like a heartbeat. The light seemed to shift between colors, moving from deep blue to vibrant green, to fiery red, and then back again. It thrummed with power, and even from this distance, I could feel the raw energy emanating from it.

Ren's eyes lit up as he saw it. "That's it," he whispered, almost reverently. "The Heartstone."

I hovered next to him, wary. "It seems a little... unguarded, don't you think?"

He nodded, his expression growing serious. "Too unguarded. There's something wrong."

As if on cue, the ground beneath us rumbled softly. I glanced around, expecting another golem or some other giant creature, but nothing appeared. The rumbling stopped, leaving an eerie silence in its wake.
