brrrRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

“Shit shit shit shiiiiiittt…” Rhine hissed, bolting onto his feet, and hurried out of his office. An air raid was not how he planned his Saturday, granted he was in the middle of leading his country that was fighting a world war and shouldn’t expect anything marginally good.

Luna had already stood up and was following him. Rhine fiddled with the cuffs of his jacket sleeves, trying to ignore the sense of impending doom he felt. Where’s Joleanna? Pruss? Anyone I actually care about?

“Vater..?”

Joleanna’s here, that’s good… Rhine thought, subconsciously taking one of Joleanna’s hands in his and leading her to the stairwell to the shelter.

“Vater, what’s going on?” Joleanna asked as she struggled slightly to keep up on her short, five-year-old legs.

“It’s just a drill, Kätzchen, nothing to worry about,” Rhine said, forcing a not-terrified expression. She’ll just slow me down…

Rhine stopped only to scoop Joleanna up and carry her, one arm under her and the other holding her shoulder facing away from him. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing herself against his chest. He could feel the not-so-small tremors of fear cursing through her body as he ran, terrified of what was to come from the air raid siren. He had started to allow the use of nuclear weapons, but if the other side had started to as well… He didn't want to think about that.

“Hurry hurry hurry…” Rhine muttered under his breath as he slammed his shoulder into the door and ran down the stairs. 6 flights… six goddamn flights…

Luna ran ahead, just like he'd taught her during the drills. She didn't only help him, she helped Prussia as well. So if Rhine didn't survive but Prussia did, Luna could help him through the trauma of… that.

Rhine was four flights down when the shrill and eerie air siren wailing stopped, and the ground shook with a BOOM. Joleanna whimpered softly as he slid down a few steps, but somehow managed to stay standing.

“It'll be okay Kätzchen… It'll be okay…” Rhine didn't believe his own words. The sense of impending doom combined with the uneasiness in his stomach made everything seem like it was going to be horrible. Someone's going to die…

Rhine managed to get to the bunker without much other trouble. But there was still that uneasiness in his stomach, and his throat felt like it was constricting a little. He was afraid, but he couldn't let his people know that, much less Joleanna.

“Shhh.. It'll be okay, we'll get through this…” Rhine murmured to the shaking five-year-old, rocking her a little. “It'll be okay… We'll survive…”

“I thought you said it was a drill….” Joleanna murmured softly, still shaking.

Shit right… “It was supposed to be a drill.”

“Okay…”

He continued to hold Joleanna close as the heads of the departments, Fraulein Schulter, Raffaele, Ilse, and Viktoriya hurried in. The only person missing was Prussia, the one person Rhine cared for who wasn’t of his blood.

“Where's Prussia?” Rhine asked, a not-so-small thread of panic gripping his voice.

Raffaele shook his head, “I don't know.”

Fraulein Schulter and Ilse both shook their heads, Viktoriya shrugged, and the heads all just said no in some way, shape, or form. No one knew where Prussia was.

“Vater..?” Joleanna asked softly, as Rhine set her down and stood up, walking over to the door of the bunker. I need to find him… He needs-

Rhine stumbled and fell to the ground when another explosion rang out, his breathing quickening as adrenaline-fueled panic set in. That one had felt like it was close to being directly overhead. He couldn’t sit this out without knowing where Prussia was, whether he was safe.

“Rhine! Get back here!” Raffaele hissed, grabbing Rhine’s arm as he got back up.

“I-I need to find..” Rhine didn’t care about the clear panic in his voice, he needed to find his lover, who was most likely buried under rubble or something.

“You seriously have a death wish…” Raffaele muttered as he dragged Rhine away from the door and back to the ground. “Prussia is the least of your worries, you need to stay alive.”

Rhine just twisted his arm out of Raffaele’s grip and started back for the door. He wouldn’t want to exist if he allowed Prussia to get hurt, because that meant he failed to protect him. He would have failed the promise he made to himself, not to allow Prussia to get hurt.

He reached the door and turned the handle, pulling on the door and running out. But before he could get a meter away from the door-
