Kai's heart was still racing, their hands trembling as they held the strange device tightly against their chest. The adrenaline from the chase hadn't fully worn off, and their mind buzzed with the implications of what they had just discovered. There was no way they could keep it for themselves. They needed someone who could help them understand it—and keep them alive. The thought of heading back to the wastelands and the few scattered towns they knew of didn't sit well with them. They were too vulnerable out there. Too many people would want to get their hands on the artifact. No, they needed someone with knowledge. Someone who could help unlock the secrets of the fallen empire.
That's when it hit them."Liora," Kai muttered under their breath. "The scholar."Liora had once been a renowned academic, specializing in the study of ancient technologies. She was a recluse now, living in a hidden settlement far from the reach of warlords like Varek. If anyone knew what this device was, it would be her.Kai glanced back at the horizon where the sun had disappeared moments ago. There was no time to waste. If the mercenaries who had attacked them were working for Varek—and Kai suspected they were—it wouldn't be long before more of them came looking.Kai stuffed the device into their satchel, securing the strap tightly across their chest. Their legs felt like jelly from all the running, but they forced themselves to keep moving, heading toward the distant mountains where Liora was said to reside.
The journey took two days. By the time Kai reached the base of the mountains, exhaustion weighed heavy on their shoulders. The air grew colder as they climbed higher, each step harder than the last. They had run out of food and water hours ago, but the thought of what lay ahead kept them going.
Liora's hidden retreat was nestled in a narrow valley, surrounded by jagged cliffs and dense forests. It wasn't easy to find, and Kai had to rely on scraps of information they'd gathered from other seekers to pinpoint its location. But eventually, they found it—a small stone building, barely visible through the thick undergrowth.
Kai approached cautiously, eyes scanning the area for any signs of movement. There were no guards, no obvious traps. Just the quiet hum of the wind and the rustle of leaves. They knocked on the door, the sound echoing unnaturally in the stillness.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the door creaked open, revealing a tall woman with sharp, intelligent eyes and a face lined with age and wisdom. She wore simple robes, her long silver hair tied back in a loose braid. This was Liora.
"You're either very brave or very foolish to come here, stranger," Liora said, her voice calm but with an edge of suspicion. "What do you want?"
"I need your help," Kai said, stepping forward, though they could feel the weight of Liora's gaze assessing them. "I found something—something important. It could change everything."Liora's expression didn't shift. "You're not the first to come here claiming they've found something important. Most leave disappointed. Why should I listen to you?"
Kai hesitated, then reached into their satchel and pulled out the device. As soon as the glow of the ancient artifact illuminated the space between them, Liora's eyes widened ever so slightly."This..." she whispered, stepping closer, her fingers trembling as she reached out to touch the device. "Where did you get this?"
"An old ruin, out in the wastelands," Kai replied, watching Liora's reaction carefully. "It activated when I touched it, but I don't know what it is. I was hoping you could tell me."Liora's fingers hovered above the device but didn't touch it. Her eyes were locked on its strange symbols, her mind racing with possibilities. After a long silence, she finally spoke."This device is part of something much larger. It's a key—a key to accessing the empire's greatest power. But it's also a curse."
Kai's heart skipped a beat. "A curse? What do you mean?"Liora stepped back, her expression grim. "The fallen empire didn't just collapse because of external forces. It was destroyed from within. The very technology that made them so powerful also drove them to madness. This device... if you use it carelessly, it could do the same to you."Kai swallowed hard, their eyes flicking back to the device. "But there has to be a way to control it, right? A way to unlock its power without... losing myself."
Liora didn't answer immediately. Instead, she turned and gestured for Kai to follow her inside. The interior of the building was dimly lit, the walls lined with bookshelves overflowing with ancient texts and scrolls. In the center of the room was a large table covered in maps, charts, and fragments of old machines.
Liora pointed to an empty chair. "Sit. If you want to know more, you'll need to listen carefully."Kai sat, placing the device on the table between them. Liora's eyes never left it as she began to explain.
"The empire's technology was built on principles we barely understand today," she said. "This device is one of many fragments of that technology, but it's unique. It was designed to interface with a larger system—a system capable of manipulating energy, matter, even reality itself. But it was dangerous, unstable. The empire tried to control it, but it slipped from their grasp."Kai leaned forward, hanging on her every word. "So, what does it do?"
"That depends," Liora replied, her voice low. "It's not just a tool—it's alive, in a sense. It responds to the user's thoughts, emotions, desires. But it also amplifies them. If your mind isn't strong enough, it can consume you. Drive you mad. Or worse."Kai frowned. "And if I can control it?"
Liora's eyes flicked up to meet Kai's. "Then you might just be able to reshape the world."A heavy silence filled the room. Kai's mind raced with possibilities, but there was one question that burned more than the rest.
"And Varek?" Kai asked. "Does he know about this?"Liora's expression darkened. "Varek has been searching for this technology for years. If he gets his hands on it, he won't just use it to conquer the wastelands. He'll use it to rebuild the empire in his own image—one ruled by fear and absolute power."
Kai clenched their fists. "Then we can't let him have it."Liora studied Kai for a long moment before nodding. "No, we can't. But you can't face him alone. The device will help, but it's not enough. You'll need allies. And you'll need to learn how to control it before Varek finds you."
Kai glanced at the device once more, its soft glow illuminating the room in an eerie light. The weight of the task ahead felt heavier than ever, but the fire in their chest burned brighter. They had come too far to back down now."I'll do whatever it takes," Kai said, determination etched into their voice.Liora nodded, a hint of approval in her eyes.
"Then we start now."
