EITHER you have the beauty or the brains.
Kiara Reyes had always known where she stood. Smart? Sure, smart enough to get out of this small town and into an academy that was out of reach for most.
But beauty? That was never something she considered having. Most people she knew had both. In her mind, they were the lucky ones.
She never felt enough for most of the time, not smart enough or pretty enough. There was always someone better in one way or another.
She glanced at the bed, all her clothes on top of it. She wasn't sure what to take with her. What if my style in that town is considered ugly? She wondered, suddenly anxious. Kiara didn't want to be the new weird girl that doesn't know how to dress up.
"Girl, stop overthinking." Her best friend, Ella grabbed one of the shirts and examined it.
"I just don't know what to take." Kiara groaned in frustration, tossing another shirt to the pile of clothes she wouldn't take.
Ella waved off her concern. "This shirt is pretty," she said, admiring it. Kiara grabbed the shirt from her hands looked at it, then gave it back to her.
"You can keep it. I never use it–Doesn't look good on me." She responded, before looking through the pile of clothes on her bed.
Ella stuffed the shirt into her bag. "You're going to come back again, right?"
"Of course, dummy. I'm only gone until I finish school, and I'll visit during breaks."
Kiara wasn't planning on staying there forever. She was just going to finish high school at the Academy and after graduating she would move back to town.
She had everything planned, not time for getting new friends or hanging out, she was only going to focus on school, and she didn't need any distractions.
A knock on her head interrupted her thoughts. "Come in!" she called, glancing over her shoulder as she heard the door creaking open and saw her mom standing on the door.
"Kiara Reyes, ¿Qué te dije? We need to go in an hour, and your suitcase is empty?" Her mom yelled as she glanced at the half-packed bag sitting on her bed.
"Whoops... I'm almost done, promise. "Kiara mumbled, she had a guilty expression on her face as her mom spoke to her.
"You better be." Her mom warned before stepping out of the room with a sigh.
Kiara quickly started folding the remaining clothes and shoving them into the suitcase. Ella, sensing her cue, stood up to leave.
"Well, I guess this is it. Don't forget to text me, and don't you dare replace me." Ella pointed her finger at her with mock seriousness.
Kiara walked towards Ella and hugged her tightly. "No one could ever replace you."
They stood there for a moment, holding onto their last moment together for a while.
She was going to miss her; they had been practically inseparable since middle school.
"Girl, I'm going to miss you," Ella murmured, her voice soft. Those simple words made Kiara smile.
"I'm gonna miss you too, also get out of here before I start tearing up. "Kiara smiled, holding back the lump in her throat.
They both chuckled and Ella grabbed her bag and left the room.
Kiara exhaled deeply, the room suddenly too quiet. After a few more minutes she zipped up her suitcase and took a final glance at it. She was going to miss all of this– her room, her house, and her friends.
But she was doing these for her future.
