Lily sat on the balcony of the Patterson mansion, the late afternoon sun casting a warm, golden glow over the sprawling garden. She watched as the wind gently swayed the trees, their leaves rustling softly in the breeze. This was her favorite spot—a small escape from the harsh realities inside the house. Here, she could pretend, even if just for a moment, that she was part of a loving family. But the fantasy never lasted long.

Sophia's laughter echoed from inside, a sound that always managed to send a shiver down Lily's spine. It was the kind of laugh that dripped with insincerity, hiding a thousand cruel intentions behind its sweetness. Sophia had perfected the art of charm, using it to manipulate everyone around her, especially their parents. She was the golden child, the apple of their eye, while Lily was the unwanted shadow, forever outshone by her sister's brilliance.

Lily sighed and turned her gaze back to the garden. Today was supposed to be a good day—her first date with David, the man who had shown her kindness in a world that had given her so little. He was different, or so she believed. He wasn't blinded by Sophia's beauty or their parents' wealth. He saw Lily for who she was, or at least, that's what she hoped.

"Thinking about David?" a voice interrupted her thoughts.

Lily turned to see Sophia standing in the doorway, a smirk playing on her lips. She was dressed impeccably, as always, in a designer dress that accentuated her perfect figure. Her long, dark hair cascaded down her shoulders, and her makeup was flawless. To the outside world, she was a vision of grace and elegance. But to Lily, she was a constant reminder of her own perceived inadequacies.

"Yes," Lily replied softly, unwilling to engage but knowing that Sophia wouldn't leave her alone until she had her say.

Sophia sauntered over, her heels clicking against the tiled floor, and leaned against the railing beside Lily. She glanced out at the garden, pretending to be interested, but Lily knew better. Sophia's mind was always working, always scheming.

"You know," Sophia began, her tone light but her words sharp, "David is a good catch. Handsome, successful, charming... It's a wonder he noticed you at all."

Lily clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She had learned long ago that it was better not to react to Sophia's barbs. Reacting only gave her more power. But it was difficult, especially when the insults hit so close to home.

Sophia laughed, a soft, melodic sound that belied the venom in her words. "Don't get too comfortable, Lily. Men like David don't stay with girls like you. They're always looking for something better."

Lily turned her head away, refusing to let Sophia see the hurt in her eyes. She knew that her sister was trying to undermine her confidence, to plant seeds of doubt. But Lily wouldn't give her the satisfaction. She had to believe that David was different, that he saw her for more than just her past and her pain.

"Anyway," Sophia continued, flipping her hair over her shoulder, "don't say I didn't warn you. Guys like him... they always have a hidden agenda."

Lily didn't respond. She stared out at the garden, willing herself to remain calm. She had to hold onto the hope that David was genuine, that he wasn't just another player in Sophia's twisted game. And as Sophia walked away, her laughter still ringing in Lily's ears, she made a silent promise to herself: she wouldn't let her sister ruin this for her. Not this time.

The restaurant was warm and inviting, with soft lighting that cast a gentle glow over the tables. Lily sat across from David, her heart racing as she tried to focus on the conversation. He looked handsome in his tailored suit, his dark hair neatly styled and his blue eyes sparkling with amusement as he recounted a funny story from his childhood. She laughed, genuinely enjoying the moment, and for the first time in a long while, she felt at ease.
