Melody was back on the bustling platform ready to face her second year at Hogwarts. "Don't forget to write to us okay? Those birds really make such a mess, are you sure there's no other way you to send mail?" Melody smiled and shook her head solemnly "If I ever find out Mum, you'll be the first to know but until then-" The sound of the train's whistle cut her off. "You best be off my sweet, have fun." She took the luggage from her fathers hands.
"Have fun? It's school Robert, she should be learning not having fun." Her mother shook her head. "Yes but it's magic school." he shrugged, "I can hardly imagine they'll be learning about Pythagoras theorem or algebra." Melody giggled at her parents bickering as she boarded the train.

A mop of raven hair tackled her from behind. Melody let out a scream as she felt her and the person on her back fall to the floor. "Merlin! Isabelle you're going to kill her!" Camilla exclaimed, standing above the two girls. Both Melody and Isabelle burst out into a fit of laughter as they picked themselves and their luggage up off the floor.

Melody blew a straggling piece of hair out of her face as she leaned her elbow on the table, with an empty plate in front of her "I swear we didn't take this long last year." she sighed clutching on to her rumbling stomach.  Isabelle leaned back to see the first years "Merlin's beard there's so many left, we're not going to be eating for a while." she rested her head on the table and closed her eyes "Wake me up when they're done yeah."

The doors to the hall slammed open making everyone jump and a few people scream. Four boys zoomed in on brooms and fireworks exploded around them. Confetti rained down on the students as they all whooped and cheered at the boys flying around the hall. McGonagall stood up from the teachers table. She was fuming. You could almost see the steam coming out of her ears as she raised her wand making the boys freeze in mid-air "MY OFFICE AFTER DINNER ALL FOUR OF YOU!" The  boys fell to the ground with a thud but they still walked to their seats, with their heads held high despite having earned themselves detention for the entire year. Melody giggled as she saw Lily smack James on the back of his head and mutter something under her breath.

The sudden firework display was very entertaining but unfortunately there were still many students left to be sorted. After what felt like hours of waiting, the final student was called to the stand "Ziegler Lukas" "RAVENCLAW" Melody gave up clapping after the fortieth  student but there was still some scattered applause mainly from the house itself.

As soon as the boy sat at the table, mouth-watering food appeared in front of the students and no one hesitated to grab the first thing they saw. Camilla nudged the sleeping Isabelle, who snapped her head up from the table and dove straight for the roasted carrots. Melody and Camilla both shared a shocked look and burst out into a fit of laughter as they watched their friend eat from the sky-high mound of food on her plate.

The girls woke up bright and early the next day excited to start their second year at Hogwarts. Many of the paintings greeted the girls, Melody was no longer shocked by the fact that they talked and she had even become acquainted the ones she saw very often.  On their walk to the Great Hall, they were soon joined by a few of their other students from their house. Melody recognised one of them as the Quidditch captain for their house "Hey Mike, what's going on with the team try outs?" The sixth-year boy brushed his light brown hair out of his eyes "Oh hey, Rowe is it?" She nodded her head surprised that he knew her name. They had never spoken before "yeah I heard around that you might be trying out for seeker this year. Um try outs are on Saturday at 7 but I'll put up a flyer in the common room that will give you all the details."
"Okay thanks Mike, I'll see you later." She gave him a small wave and went to join her friends who were slightly ahead.

"Here are your timetables ladies, I hope you're all looking forward to Herbology with me." The girls each took their respective timetables from their Head of House "Thanks Professor Sprout" the three of them chorused. "Oh look we have Care for Magical Creatures! I've been looking forward to that all Summer, let's go" She grabbed her friends hands and rushed them out the hall.  They raced down to the school grounds and saw some students had already arrived "What! Why are we always with the Slytherins." Isabelle sighed, shaking her head in disappointment. Melody nodded in agreement "Well at least it's not Gryffindors, those guys are-"
"Annoying, brawny, egotistical, arrogant. Hey the names Crouch, Barty Crouch." The boy stuck out his hand with sly smirk on his face. "Um okayy... " Melody gently shook the fingertips of his hand "I'm Melody, this is Isabelle and that's Camilla." She motioned to her friends next to her.

Another boy joined their little group "Ignore him he's always trying to flirt with everyone, I'm Evan by the way." They were shortly interrupted by the teacher, calling them over to a table filled with nifflers. "Oh they are just the cutest little things!" Camilla cooed over the black and white animal on her table. "Students the nifflers are one between two so find a partner to work with." Shuffling and people's names were being shouted left right and centre as people got into their pairs. The girls turned to each other contemplating who would leave. "Maybe we can ask the professor if we can be a three" Isabelle suggested Camilla nodding alongside her "No it's okay you guys pair up, I'm going to find that Slytherin guy. He seems... interesting?" Melody smiled at her frowning friends and put her thumbs up reassuringly as she walked towards the small group of Slytherins. She tapped Crouch on the shoulder and he whipped around to find Melody smiling up at him "Hey Reg! We found you a partner!"

"Oh wait what?" He grabbed her shoulders and steered her towards the black haired boy, who was holding a niffler. He looked quite ridiculous holding the furry creature with such a serious face. "Hey, long time no see." She offered him a small smile, which was partially returned with a slight head nod. He walked through his friends and made his way to an empty table "Come on then." He looked behind him to see if Melody was following.

"What are we actually meant to be doing with this?" Regulus motioned to the brown animal, who was busying itself with a golden keychain from Melody's bag.  "Um I think we have to train it. To not collect shiny stuff." The clouds parted in the sky and the winter sun revealed itself. A beam of light reflected off a bobby pin in her hair, which caught the attention of the niffler. Then all hell broke loose. The next few moments, to Melody, genuinely felt like they happened in slow motion. The feral niffler leapt from the table lunging at Melody's hair. The sudden impact of the creature caused her to fall to the ground with a niffler running loose in her hair. For approximately five minutes she was on the ground wrestling with the wild, untamed animal "No! Stop it! Bad niffler!" She freed it from her hair and holding it at arms length, she picked herself up from the ground.

Her hair was a mess. Her uniform was a mess. In all honesty, she looked like she had been attacked by the whomping willow. She turned to Regulus to give him the niffler, only to find him with his fist to his mouth and his cheeks puffed  "It's okay, you can laugh." She sighed dejectedly  and her two friends came rushing over after seeing the commotion. "Oh my Godric! Mels, what happened!" Camilla quickly straightened Melody's robes and picked pieces of grass out of her. Meanwhile, Isabelle was wheezing with laughter, clutching on to the table for support. "How did you get into a fight with a niffler and lose?"
"It wasn't a fight per se. More like she was attacked." Regulus chimed in, still holding the furry niffler.  "Well you guys are going to have your hands full for the next four weeks." Camilla grinned "This one seems like a trouble maker." Melody looked at her with a confused expression "Four weeks?" Isabelle nodded "Yeah, professor Kettleburn came around to our tables and said this project was going to last a month-ish and that we'd have to take care of it with our partner." Melody turned to face Regulus "Well partner, I guess I'll be seeing you a lot."
