NINA
Groaning as I tried to raise myself up in the bed, feeling white cloth wrapped on my elbows and around my chest, I mumbled as I tried unsuccessfully to push the on for the nurse to get her tail in her to get me to the bathroom. I felt a tingling pressure in my bowel that demanded attention. My displeasure at seeing Lincoln flipping through a magazine grated my nerves. I noticed him leaning back in the chair as if he belonged there with his beautiful bronzed self. With a warm smile on his happy face he looked up from the magazine and grinned as if he had been waiting all day to see me.
Didn't he know he didn't belong there. Judging by the look on his face, I might have to remind him that he wasn't needed in this room.
"Lincoln..." I croaked through dry-chapped lips that hurt when I moved them.
"About time you woke up, sleepy." He rushed to the phone and dialed the nurses station.
"She's up."
He clicked off and then faced me.
When he moved to the right side, I noticed a chubby but simple-faced woman who wore a lovely maroon and black sweater dress that clung to her toned body. The smile reached her humble eyes which shone of curiosity and concern.
"I'm so glad you're alright."
She reached forward and hugged me warmly.
Lincoln introduced her quickly.
"This is my fiancée Angel."
Blood ran cold in my body as I withdrew the hug with flashes of insecurity covering my body, thankfully the pink and white sheet held my body like a glue. The rest of my body went into shock and I stared blankly ahead.
With stiff lips I croaked, "Hello."
Trying not to connect with her cheery eyes, I ushered towards Lincoln for a glass of water, which he slowly provided as if he was trying to search me for a clue of my emotions. I definitely wasn't going to say anything embarrassing.
"Thanks for coming here." I talked slow as if moles were between my teeth.
Oblivious to my discomfort, she continued her happy talk.
"I have really been wanting to meet you. I know you and Lincoln have known each other an awfully long time. I'm glad your plane accident wasn't too bad. I can't wait for you to meet the rest of the family."
An air of illness caressed my mouth making me want to throw up. What the heck, did he think, bringing his wife here was going to do to my spirit? I was totally confused and continued to listen to snippets of her conversation.
"We have been worried sick since we heard the news."
"Glad my best friend is alright."
"Honey, she doesn't look well, should we get the doctor."
"Not sure. Nina, are you okay."
Weaving in and out of consciously I felt like clouds of sadness were taunting me, piercing me with icicles. I wondered why me and why now? The last time I checked, he had no wife, or even a fiancée. See this is what Darlene was warning me about. This man coming in here with an unsuspecting woman.
And I had tried to get rid of him. Why is he bringing her in my face. Maybe he wants to get back at me. Not sure. The devil sure is on his grind as far as I'm concerned. He wants to break me down, but that's not gonna happen.
My finger caressed a bruised chin and then I spoke.
"I'm fine but I need a little quiet time."
Lincoln reached over and readjusted my pillow and left the room to speak with the doctor.
