"Putrid genes have rotten your soul."
She spoke with a terse inflection. He watched as the tears welled up in her eyes. This isn't what he wanted. This isn't where they were meant to be. Months and months of back and forth, pointless frivolities he had worked so hard to get past and yet, he started to see that there was no point of return. As usual, he had fucked up.
"I-I— fuck, I know. I just..."
"What?"
"I just thought—"
"Oh, you thought did you? I was not aware of you being capable of such an act. Did a light suddenly switch on in your head? Because you've been gone for so long now. Absent. I've had to be enough for the two of us and I can't keep putting myself in second place whilst you do God knows fuck what."
"I was trying to get better. I've been trying. I know you see me as this- this fucking, uh, rodent leaching fuck but I'm learning. I've given you time."
"Time? You really don't understand how people function do you? Are you really that above the common man? This isn't a parking ticket, you can't speed through this and not expect to pay a fine because you're privileged enough to be above that."
"I'm sorry."
"I don't care! You hurt me!"
He was on his knees now, he had crawled to her, arms gripping to her thighs. Knowing nothing he could say would rectify what he'd done but he still tried to hold her.
"I need you, please." It took everything in him to choke out those words in panic.
Her hands laced through his hair, giving him the only sense of relaxation he'd gotten in weeks. He let out a sigh before her hands reached down and detangled his from her legs.
"No, that's it. I'm done." She walked off and he could only look at her back as she did.
