The crimson lips approached the microphone, which was barely upright.
They began to move imperceptibly. Then the woman cleared her throat loudly to calm the assembly.
' We are gathered here on this first day of January in the year two thousand two hundred, at the inauguration of the Second Dimension, the Senior Members of the Council of Ethics.
As a consequence of the attack of the twenty-fifth of August two thousand and ninety-eight,
By decision of the said High Members, EGM law number one, paragraph two is revoked.
Paragraphs five, seven and ten will undergo similar changes.
The following amendment is instituted:
Until further notice and until performance has been achieved, the GM population is considered to be an object, a prototype and an unfinished product;
Consequently, the fundamental rights enjoyed by the GM population are abolished. For example, they will be grouped together in a single neighbourhood;
Given their new status as prototypes, the GM population will be subjected to an in-depth study until performance is achieved. This study may take any form, but the law will not impose any penalties on those carrying out the study. '
A heavy silence fell like a leaden blanket over the audience.
That was it.
You can never go back.
