As the golden hues of the setting sun deepened, Karna returned to the residence with Shon, the two laughing heartily as they approached the garden. The warmth of the evening contrasted sharply with the icy chill that had settled over Draupadi's heart. She stood alone by the flowers, her fingers trembling as they absentmindedly brushed against the petals.
Karna, his sharp eyes immediately noticing the shift in her demeanor, paused. “Draupadi,” he called out gently, making his way toward her. “You look troubled. What’s wrong?”
She turned, forcing a smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m fine, Karna. Just… lost in thought.”
Karna wasn’t convinced. He reached for her hand, pulling her close to him, his brow furrowed with concern. “I can tell when something is troubling you. You don’t have to hide it from me. Tell me, what has happened?”
Draupadi hesitated, her heart heavy with the weight of the promise she had made. How could she tell him what Gandhari had asked of her? How could she speak of something so intimate, so personal, when she wasn’t even sure how to process it herself?
Karna lifted her chin, his voice soft but firm. “Draupadi, I am your husband. Whatever burdens you carry, we carry together. Please, tell me.”
Her eyes welled up with tears, and she could no longer hold back. The pressure of Gandhari’s request, the confusion, the heartbreak—it all came crashing down.
“Gandhari… she came to me with a request. A request I could not refuse.”
Karna’s expression darkened slightly, his protective instincts flaring up. “What did she ask of you?”
Draupadi swallowed hard, her voice barely above a whisper. “She asked for… a donation. Something so personal, so sacred… my womb.”
The silence that followed her confession was thick and heavy. Karna’s face drained of color as the full weight of her words hit him. He took a step back, his hand slipping from hers.
“Your… womb?” His voice was hoarse with disbelief.
Draupadi nodded, tears slipping down her cheeks. “She didn’t explain everything. She only said it was for the greater good. That it was necessary.”
Karna’s fists clenched at his sides, his eyes burning with a mix of anger and confusion. “How could she… How could she ask such a thing from you? From us?”
Draupadi sobbed quietly, her heart aching not just for herself but for the man standing before her—the man she loved, the man she had chosen to stand by. She knew how much this would hurt him, and that realization crushed her even more.
“I didn’t know what to say."
The shock that rippled across Karna’s face transformed into raw, unfiltered rage. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, and his jaw tightened until the veins in his neck were visible. He looked at Draupadi, his eyes blazing.
“And you gave it to her?” His voice was low, but it cut through the air like a blade.
Draupadi’s lip quivered, her voice breaking. “I didn’t know what else to do. She’s a queen. She asked me not as Gandhari the royal, but as a woman in need.”
Karna’s fury reached its peak. He turned abruptly, the force of his movement causing the flowers nearby to sway. “This is absurd! What gives her the right to ask you something so sacred? From us?”
Before Draupadi could respond, Karna stormed off toward the garden entrance, his intentions clear. He was heading for Gandhari, driven by anger. His fists clenched, his breath sharp and uneven, each step echoed his rising fury.
“No, Karna!” Draupadi’s voice was filled with desperation as she rushed to catch up to him, her hand grabbing his arm to stop him.
“Draupadi, this is unacceptable!” Karna’s voice was loud now, his rage bubbling to the surface. “How dare she ask such a thing? What does she expect us to give up next? This is no mere donation! It’s our future she’s asking for!”
Draupadi stepped in front of him, blocking his path. “She’s a queen, Karna. You cannot confront her like this.”
“I don’t care if she’s a queen!” Karna roared. “This is beyond politics or titles. This is personal. She crossed a line, and I will not let it go unchallenged.”
Tears welled up in Draupadi’s eyes, but she held her ground, her voice trembling but firm. “Karna, please. This isn’t the way. You must understand… Gandhari wouldn’t ask something like this without a reason. There’s something more at play here.”
Karna’s chest heaved with anger, but as he stared into Draupadi’s tear-filled eyes, he hesitated. His love for her was strong enough to hold him back, but the fire inside him refused to die down.
“What reason could justify this?” Karna demanded, his voice a mix of frustration and hurt. “Why would she ask for such a thing? What could she be thinking?”
Draupadi shook her head, her own confusion mirrored in her eyes. “I don’t know. I don’t understand it either. But we have to trust that there’s more to this than we can see.”
Karna’s eyes flashed. “Trust? How can you ask me to trust someone who asks for something so precious without any explanation?”
Draupadi’s voice softened, her tone pleading. “Because she’s Gandhari. She’s always been wise, and though this request is strange, it must have a reason. We cannot act out of anger. We need to understand first.”
Karna’s body remained tense, his fists still clenched, but he looked away, struggling to contain the storm inside him. “And what if there is no explanation, Draupadi? What if this is just manipulation?”
Draupadi bit her lip, her mind racing. She didn’t know what Gandhari’s motives were, and a part of her feared that Karna might be right. Yet, in her heart, she couldn’t believe that Gandhari would ask for such a thing without purpose.
“I don’t know, Karna,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “But please… don’t confront her in anger. We need answers, not more conflict.”
Karna breathed deeply, trying to calm himself, but his frustration was far from gone. “What answers could possibly justify this, Draupadi? She’s asking for something that can’t be undone.”
Draupadi placed her hands gently on his chest, her eyes filled with emotion. “I don’t have the answers yet. But I believe there’s something more. Gandhari isn’t cruel. She wouldn’t ask for this without cause.”
Karna looked down at her, his face softening slightly as her touch reached him, but his inner turmoil remained. “And what if she is being manipulated, Draupadi? What if Shakuni has poisoned her mind like he’s done with Duryodhana?”
The mention of Shakuni sent a shiver down Draupadi’s spine. She knew Karna’s suspicions weren’t unfounded. Shakuni was a master manipulator, and if anyone could twist Gandhari’s intentions, it was him.
But even so, Draupadi couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more beneath the surface. Gandhari’s sorrow, her tears—it had all felt too real, too genuine.
“I don’t know,” Draupadi whispered, her voice breaking. “But confronting her won’t give us the answers. Please, Karna. For me, let’s find out what’s truly going on before we act.”
Karna stared at her for a long moment, his anger warring with his love for her. Finally, with a heavy sigh, he relented, though his rage hadn’t completely faded.
“Fine,” he said, his voice still tight with emotion. “But if there’s no explanation, Draupadi, I won’t stay silent. I can’t.”
Draupadi nodded, grateful that he was willing to hold back, even if only for a while. “We’ll find the truth, Karna. Together.”
As they stood there in the twilight, the tension between them slowly eased, but the questions remained, haunting both their minds.
Why had Gandhari made such an unimaginable request? What was she hiding?
And most troubling of all—why had Draupadi agreed?
Karna’s jaw tightened, his eyes locking onto hers with a mix of anguish and betrayal. “You should have told me. We could have faced this together.”
Draupadi took a step closer, reaching out to him. “I didn’t want to burden you with this. You already carry so much. I thought… I thought I could protect you from it.”
Karna let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. “Protect me? Draupadi, we are in this together. You don’t have to protect me from anything, least of all something that affects both of us so deeply.”
He turned away from her, his hands gripping the railing of the garden, his knuckles white from the strain. “This is not a small request, Draupadi. This is… this is everything.”
Draupadi felt a fresh wave of tears spill over, her heart breaking at the sight of him in so much pain. She had never wanted to hurt him, but now, standing in the midst of this impossible situation, she didn’t know how to make it right.
She moved toward him, wrapping her arms around his waist, and pressing her cheek to his back. “I’m sorry, Karna. I didn’t want this. I didn’t want any of this.”
For a moment, there was only silence between them, the sound of the evening breeze rustling through the trees the only thing breaking the quiet. Then, slowly, Karna turned to face her, his eyes softening as he saw the depth of her sorrow.
“I don’t blame you,” he whispered, pulling her into his arms. “But this… this changes everything.”
Draupadi nodded, clinging to him as if holding on for dear life. “I know.”
They stood like that for what felt like an eternity, holding each other in the fading light, both of them lost in the enormity of what had just happened. There were no easy answers, no simple solutions. But for now, they had each other, and in that moment, it was enough.
As the night began to settle in, Karna kissed the top of her head, his voice soft but resolute. “We will face this together, Draupadi. Whatever happens, we will not let anyone tear us apart.”
Draupadi nodded, her tears slowly subsiding. “I know. I love you, Karna.”
“And I love you,” he replied, his voice filled with emotion. “No matter what.”
They stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, as the stars began to twinkle in the sky above them. At that moment, they knew they would face whatever came their way—together.
