The sky hung heavy with the acrid smoke of destruction, a somber curtain cast over the crumbling ruins of Wall Maria. Dust and debris floated on the wind like the ashes of a fallen world. Moblit Berner, his eyes bleary from hours of combat, stood atop the remnants of Wall Rose, his ODM gear still strapped tightly to his frame. His chest rose and fell with each labored breath, the adrenaline of the battle slowly wearing off. The Colossal and Armored Titans had brought devastation to the people, and the Titans that followed had ravaged everything in their path. It was a sight Moblit would never forget, but for now, the Survey Corps had to regroup.
A few of his comrades stood nearby, their expressions mirroring the same exhaustion. They were on guard, scanning the horizon for any signs of movement. Titans had a way of sneaking up on you, even the smaller ones. The lull in the attack gave no comfort; it was simply the calm before the next storm.
"How many did we lose today?" one of the soldiers murmured under their breath, the words barely carrying on the wind.
"Too many," another replied, their voice equally grim.
Moblit clenched his fists, trying to hold back the frustration and grief threatening to overtake him. Their losses were staggering, and the thought of how many comrades had perished today was almost unbearable. There was a bitter taste in his mouth, the helplessness settling like lead in his stomach.
Just as he was about to speak, a flicker of movement caught his eye. Down below, in the vast expanse of grass beyond the wall, something was off. He squinted, trying to focus through the haze. There, surrounded by the massive forms of a few stray Titans, was... a figure?
"Wait, do you see that?" Moblit's voice broke the silence, sharp and urgent.
The others followed his gaze, their eyes widening as they spotted what he had noticed. Lying in the grass, unmoving, was a woman—her blonde hair almost golden against the pale green of the field. She looked tiny, vulnerable, and defenseless. And around her, three Titans loomed, their grotesque forms shambling closer to her limp body.
"Is she alive?" one of the soldiers asked, a note of disbelief in their voice.
"Doesn't matter. We can't just leave her to die like that," Moblit replied, the determination evident in his tone. "Ready your gear. We're going down."
Before anyone could protest, Moblit had already launched himself off the wall, his ODM gear propelling him into the air with a sharp hiss. The familiar pull of the cables tightened as he aimed for the first Titan. His blades gleamed in the dim light as he adjusted his trajectory, swinging toward the closest threat.
His comrades followed closely, their figures cutting through the air like arrows. As Moblit approached the nearest Titan, he felt the rush of battle fill his veins once more. His heart pounded in his chest as he braced for impact.
With a swift, calculated strike, Moblit's blades sliced through the nape of the first Titan's neck, severing it cleanly. The creature let out a low groan before collapsing to the ground in a heap. He didn't wait to watch it fall. Instead, he turned his attention to the next one, already moving toward the second Titan.
The other soldiers worked in tandem, taking down the second and third Titans with precision. They had been through this routine enough times to know how to work as a unit. Within moments, the last of the Titans fell, its enormous body thudding heavily into the earth, sending dust and debris into the air.
Moblit barely paused as he landed on the grass, running immediately toward the woman lying on the ground. Up close, she looked even younger than he had expected—perhaps in her early twenties, with a small, delicate frame that seemed all the more fragile out here in the wilds beyond the walls. Her skin was pale, marred with dirt and minor cuts, but what concerned him most was the faint rise and fall of her chest. She was alive, but barely.
