The early morning light filtered through the thin, worn-out curtains, casting soft shadows across the small bedroom. The room was modest, reflecting the person who lived within it—simple, practical, and filled with memories rather than luxuries. Posters of old bands lined the walls, their edges curling from years of being tacked up. A desk cluttered with textbooks, empty coffee mugs, and a few half-hearted attempts at journaling sat in one corner.Noa Olivar lay sprawled on the bed, her dark curls spread over the pillow, scrolling through her phone with that intense, brooding expression she often wore. At five foot five, Noa's presence always felt larger than life, even in the small confines of her room. Her sharp features, full of quiet strength, were softened by the light, but the fire that burned in her eyes was unmistakable. She was a fighter, always had been.
The door creaked open, and a familiar figure slipped inside. Y/N, barely five feet tall, with wide, curious eyes and an ever-present quiet smile, moved through the room with the kind of ease that came only from years of shared space and comfort. If Noa was the fire, Y/N was the calm, the steady wave that kept everything grounded. Together, they had become more than just best friends; they were each other's anchors in a world that often felt like it was spinning out of control.
"Morning," Y/N said softly, her voice like a quiet melody that Noa never got tired of hearing. She closed the door behind her, leaning against it for a moment as if gathering her thoughts.
"Morning," Noa replied with a rasp, glancing up and offering a rare, genuine smile. For all her toughness, Noa had always been softer around Y/N, protective in a way that was almost instinctual. They were bestfriends after all , right?
They had known each other since they could remember, two little girls who had been thrown into a world they didn't quite understand but had learned to navigate together. Y/N had always been the quieter of the two, more sensitive, while Noa had built up walls, determined to be strong for both of them. Where one faltered, the other rose. It was an unspoken pact, a silent agreement that they had made long ago, probably before they even knew what it meant to promise something so deeply.
Y/N plopped down on the bed beside Noa, pulling her legs up and crossing them underneath her. "You're up early," she remarked, glancing at the phone in Noa's hand. "I thought you'd sleep in today. Thought i'd have to jump on you to wake you up , anyways Marj let me in" Y/N smirked.
Noa shrugged, used to it, her eyes flicking back to the screen before she locked it and tossed the phone onto the bedside table. "Couldn't sleep," she admitted, her voice low. "Too much on my mind."
Y/N nodded. She understood without needing an explanation. That was the thing about them; words were often unnecessary. They had been through everything together—schoolyard fights, late-night panic attacks, navigating the complexities of high school, and, most recently, the tangled mess of secrets and dangers that had taken over their lives in Millwood. A.
Noa had always been Y/N's protector. Even as kids, when Y/N had been picked on for her height or her soft-spoken nature, or her weight which eventually led to an ED. Noa had been the one to step in, to throw a punch if necessary, to stand tall when Y/N couldn't. And in return, Y/N had been Noa's calm, the voice of reason when her anger threatened to boil over, the steady hand that pulled her back from the edge.
"What's bothering you?" Y/N asked gently, though she could already guess. Noa's life had been far from easy lately, between her mom's addiction and the mess they had been dragged into with the whole 'A' situation. But Y/N had always been there, standing by Noa's side, ready to face whatever came their way.
"It's just... everything, you know?" Noa sighed, leaning back against the headboard. "It feels like we can't catch a break. Every time I think we've got a handle on things, something else happens."
Y/N reached out, her small hand resting lightly on Noa's arm. The gesture was simple, but it was enough. It always had been.
"We'll get through it," Y/N said, her voice full of quiet certainty. "We always do."
Noa turned her head to look at her, her eyes softening in that way they only ever did when it was just the two of them. "Yeah, because you're always there to pull me out of whatever mess I get us into." she giggled pushing y/n slightly.
Y/N chuckled. "It's usually the other way around."
"Not true," Noa countered, but her smile widened. "I don't know what I'd do without you, you know that?"
Y/N's heart swelled at the words. Noa wasn't one for emotional declarations, but when she said something like that, Y/N knew she meant it. And it was mutual. They had been through so much—too much for most people their age—and yet, through all the chaos, they had never wavered in their loyalty to each other. Y/N couldn't imagine her life without Noa, couldn't even fathom what it would be like not to have that constant presence beside her.
"You'll never have to find out," Y/N promised softly. She softly smiled looking down before pausing and hesitating. "When.. when you went to juvie.. I- i"
Noa quickly understood and pulled her in for a hug , "i know it's okay i'm here now"
For a moment, they sat in comfortable silence, the kind that could only exist between two people who knew each other so deeply, so intimately, that words became unnecessary. Outside, the day was slowly waking up, the sounds of cars starting and people going about their business drifting in through the open window. But in that room, it was just them, their own little world where nothing else mattered.
After a while, Noa shifted, sitting up a bit straighter. "You hungry? I could make us something."
Y/N smiled, knowing that Noa wasn't really asking if she was hungry. It was Noa's way of taking care of her, of showing affection in her own, subtle way. "Oh no i'm okay i've eaten. But I'm helping this time."
Noa raised an eyebrow, silently hoping y/n wasn't struggling with her eating again , No it can't be , she'd tell her right? She quickly pulled out of her own thoughts , her trademark smirk creeping across her face. "You? In the kitchen? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen."
Y/N rolled her eyes but laughed. "I'm not that bad."
"You set the fire alarm off making toast last week."
"It was an accident!"
"An accident that nearly burned the house down."
Y/N shook her head, still smiling. "Fine, I'll leave the cooking to you. But I'm still helping."
Noa got up, pulling Y/N along with her. "Deal. You can be my sous-chef, but only if you promise not to touch anything flammable."
"Deal," Y/N agreed, falling into step beside her as they made their way to the kitchen.
It was in moments like this—quiet, ordinary moments—that Y/N realized just how much Noa meant to her. They had been through hell and back, but somehow, they had come out of it stronger, their bond unshakable. Noa had always been the protector, the one who stood up when Y/N couldn't. But Y/N knew that in her own way, she had been Noa's protector too—keeping her grounded, reminding her that she didn't have to be strong all the time, at least not when it was just the two of them.
As they stood side by side in the kitchen, Noa chopping vegetables with an ease that came from years of practice of having to fend for herself , Y/N felt that familiar sense of safety wash over her. It wasn't just the comfort of the space or the routine of cooking breakfast together. It was Noa. Noa, who had been by her side since they were kids, who had always been her safe space, her protector.
And Y/N knew, deep down, that as long as they had each other, they could face whatever came next. They always had, and they always would.
