The atmosphere in the court was thick with tension as the proceedings continued. The Emperor presided at the head of the hall, his expression stern and unyielding.
Inaya stood by the side, shaken and pale, her eyes fixed at void as the ministers debated her family's fate. Her parents and Sir Ahmad were in dungeon, and she had no clue of their well being.
The council minister, a thin man with a sharp voice, addressed the court. "The evidence against Hamad Al-Amir is irrefutable. As such, he must be sentenced to death", he demanded.
As the Emperor's words echoed through the grand hall, pronouncing her father's death sentence, Inaya felt as if the world had collapsed around her. The room seemed to close in, the verdict pressing down on her like a crushing force.
Her mind grew numb, her body frozen in place, unable to comprehend or react. It was as though her soul had already withered, leaving her a hollow shell.
The anguish of knowing she could do nothing to save him, the overwhelming sense of helplessness, and the cold finality of the sentence left her feeling as if she had been stripped of every ounce of life and hope. The pain was too great, and she could only stand there, paralyzed.
"Regarding his daughter, Inaya Al-Amir, given her association with a traitor, the only fitting punishment is confinement in the dungeon", a minister stated.
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the room. Inaya's heart pounded in her chest, fear of her child's safety adding to her numb mind.
From behind the veiled seat where the Empress sat, her voice interrupted the murmur, soft but resolute. "Your Majesty, I must implore you to reconsider Inaya's fate. She is carrying the Grandheir. It is inhumane to cast her into the dungeons in her condition",
The Emperor turned his gaze to the veiled figure of the Empress, a flicker of contemplation crossing his face. The ministers was caught off guard by this unexpected plea and began to voice their objections.
"The law is clear", one minister said, his tone firm. "A traitor's daughter cannot be shown mercy. We cannot afford to appear weak",
"If we show leniency now, it will undermine the authority of this court and set a dangerous precedent", another added.
The Emperor raised a hand, silencing the room. His gaze settled on the Empress. "Your concerns are noted. However, the law must be upheld. We must find a compromise that respects both the law and the Empress's concerns",
Inaya's heart raced as she awaited the Emperor's decision. Her breaths came in short, anxious bursts.
"Inaya Al-Amir, you shall not be sent to the dungeons. Instead, you will be confined to isolated quarters within the palace. You must remain under guard and your movements shall be restricted. This arrangement must be in effect until the child is born. After the birth, you shall be held as a prisoner, and the court must determine your final fate based on further evidence", came the verdict.
The Empress's voice gentle yet firm, as she spoke from behind her veil. "Thank you, Your Majesty. This compromise allows Inaya to remain in a relatively safe environment for the sake of the Grandheir",
"This is unprecedented. The court's decision should be absolute", The head minister frowned, his displeasure evident.
"The decision stands. The law will be upheld, but compassion for the unborn child will not be ignored. The court will reconvene after the birth to reassess the situation", The Emperor said in finality.
As the court's decree was announced, she was led away from the hall. Her eyes were filled with sorrow, but held a glimmer of hope at least for her child's future.
