I've been sleeping with the light off

I wanted to remember

Will you come a little closer now

And see that I'm a

Scrawny motherfucker with a cool hairstyle

Scrawny motherfucker with a cool hairstyle

Scrawny motherfucker with a cool hairstyle

I'm a scrawny motherfucker with a cool hairstyle

Y/N hummed the lyrics of the song that she was listening to in the cramped backseat of her parents' car, which was Scrawny by Wallows. She was bored and uncomfortable—going through nearly three different playlists in one car trip. She was staring out the car window as the beautiful mountain ranges turned into dense forests on either side of the endless stretch of road, the tall Redwood trees looming overhead. Her dad was at the wheel, peacefully driving along the strip of black asphalt as her mom sat in the passenger seat reading a travel pamphlet about the state they were moving to. More specifically, that state was Oregon. Y/N took a few scenic photos on her phone and deemed them somewhat good enough to keep along the way, although she couldn't stop thinking about how drastically her life has already changed.

The song she was previously listening to faded into some other song, but she wasn't paying much attention to the lyrics as she got more and more lost in her head. This so-called 'new beginning', as her parents liked to call it, was a devastating blow to her usual teenage life. A new school, having to make new friends? It was the tail end of summer vacation, and with the looming dread of a new school in some backwater town she wasn't used to, didn't make her feel any better about the sudden move. As the family of three continued in their compact vehicle—Y/N's attention was drawn to a sign that whirred by in a quick blur. The sign was starting to fade, crying for a new coat of paint, yet it announced their arrival in the sleepy, middle-of-nowhere town called Gravity Falls. The whole reason why they moved was because of Y/N's grandparents and how they were 'getting up there in age,' and 'we should be closer to them in case something happens,' although Y/N seriously doubted that her grandparents were that fragile. At least they lived in the state of Washington, so it wasn't too far...Y/N supposed.

"Y/N! We're in our new town," Y/N's father announced almost too joyfully for her taste.

"Isn't it lovely? I can tell we're going to enjoy it here," her mother somehow agreed. Y/N however, just groaned as more buildings passed. One in the middle of a clearing caught her eye, however. The broken sign that was displayed from the cabin's roof read: The Mystery (S)hack (the S for "Shack" was barely hanging on). She made a mental note to possibly check the place out, since it looked like some kind of dumb tourist trap.

"How much farther until we get to the new house?" Y/N asked, peeking out from behind her mother's seat. At this point she had slipped her headphones down and around her neck. She faintly heard Girls by girl in red playing from the speakers that helped drown out the world around her when she wanted to ignore it for whatever reason.

"Not too much longer, we've got one more turn to make," Her father replied, glancing at Y/N via the rear-view mirror.

"I can't wait to see the house! I know it's going to be perfect for the three of us," Her mother chimed in.

"I just want to start decorating my new room, and maybe explore the town," She laid back against the leather seat behind her, feeling the car shift as her father made the last turn before they turned into the driveway of their new home. Her grandparents were on the front porch of a cozy looking cottage-y house beside the driveway they just pulled into.

After the car finally halted, Y/N wasted no time clambering out of the car to stretch her legs. They were a little sore from being cramped in a small space, since she had most of her stuff in the backseat with her. Everything else was in a moving van that was following right behind them the whole trip. It was being driven by her uncle who offered to help them move. Once Y/N had done some VERY mandatory stretching—she grabbed her backpack and messenger back as the first items to take into the new house. Her posters and everything else would have to wait until she was able to get them. Y/N's parents stayed outside to talk to her uncle and grandparents, so she took the opportunity to explore the house before her parents drowned it in tacky decor. She already had her own key so getting inside wasn't too hard. The building was spacious and already cozy...but she had her mind set on finding the stairs that led to the supposed attic that her parents said she could have as her room.

Y/N climbed up the first flight of stairs after exploring the spacious downstairs area. The living room was plain and simple currently, and the other rooms weren't that interesting either. She explored the second floor—finding what would be her parent's room, the bathroom, and a spare bedroom. She also located the stairs that led to what would be her attic room. She climbed them and opened the door, staring in awe. The room was dusty and needed a tad bit of TLC, but it wasn't anything she couldn't fix in a day or two. Faintly in the distance, Y/N heard her parents, uncle, and grandparents enter the house. She abandoned her two bags and then went back down the stairs to interact with people before her parents forced her to.

"How do you like the house, sweetheart?" Y/N's dad asked, grinning when he saw his daughter emerge from the stairs.

"It's not too bad," Y/N shrugged, stuffing her hands in her hoodie pockets. "I already found my room."

"That's good! I'm glad that you like it," Her mom chimed in.

"At least you get to see me and Grandpa much more often! We've missed you all," Y/N's grandmother grinned with a smile.

Y/N started to zone out, and then she remembered seeing the tacky looking tourist trap along the road when they first entered town...but she figured her parents wouldn't let her leave to explore until she took the last of her belongings up to her new room. So, she quietly slipped away from the adults and began to bring her items inside. She just piled some boxes in a corner, and then helped her uncle and dad bring her bed frame up from the moving van. Unsurprisingly enough, the move took them the rest of the day—and it left the entire family exhausted. Luckily all the beds were set up, so they all had a comfortable place to sleep at least. Y/N immediately retired to her new room, finding a cozy pair of pajamas to change into before she flopped onto her poorly made bed—passing out a mere few minutes after.

A/N - The tail end of this is kinda lazy bc I'm starting to get really tired, but be happy I actually posted the first chapter lmaooo :)
