MY BOSS NI-KI
1.Senior Year. The last year before adulthood. I've been an academic weapon since middle school and I have never changed. My mindset is that if you work hard enough it will get you somewhere most people could never reach. I studied hard to make sure I can get into the top universities and be top ranked in my class. I even snagged class president (applause please).
However, a lot of others don't seem to care much about that. Especially Ni-ki. He is adored by everyone even though he's one of the lowest ranks in the whole school. How ridiculous! Even the girls go crazy about him, he was always popular with the girls. His cool personality and his fierce look is what makes everyone fawn over him. Even me...
Now, I'm not too happy that I ended up being apart of the million girls who have a crush on him. Hear me out! It didn't start like the rest of them. It started one day back in middle school...
I walk happily to the kitchen, having my school uniform freshly washed. My mom setting out breakfast at the table. I quickly run over and stuff my face. "Slow down" my mom says. "It's not gonna run off anywhere." I laugh and rice flies out of my mouth onto my older brother. "Ew disgusting!" He yells out. Me and my mom chuckle as he wipes off the rice quickly in disgust. Once I finish eating I kiss my mom on the cheek, grab my backpack and rush out the door.
I fly down the apartment stairs towards the sidewalk. I whistle as I begin my morning walk to the bus stop. The birds chirp and the busy streets keep me at peace. My mornings are always the same just how I like it. As I walk, I see a luxury car pulls over to the curb ahead of me. Out comes a boy, his backpack gets thrown out and the car hurries away. The boy stands there for a moment and grabs his backpack. He begins brushing off the dirt and small rocks that attached to it. I walk close enough that he's right in front of me. I pause, looking at him.
"What you looking at." He says with a deep rude tone. I see a small bruise on his face and gasp. "Are you hurt?" I say with my eyes wide. He covers his bruise with his hands. "I'm fine go away" he coldly yells. I unzip my backpack, digging in my mess for a couple seconds. Out I pull a pink bandaid. "Here this should help." I say, shoving the bandaid in his face. He hits my hand away. "A pink bandaid seriously." He scoffs. As he turns around he whines in pain. "It may be pink but it will help. You are hurt." I say one last time trying to convince him. He turns around and looks at the pink bandaid and then looks at me. "Fine..." he mumbles.
I come close and focus as I make sure I put the bandaid on perfectly. As we are face to face I notice his eyes staring at me. I couldn't help but to stare back into his eyes. Suddenly my heart started beating fast. His skin was so pale and smooth, his lips are a baby pink that look soft and cushioned. His eyes pierce into me but didn't scare me, it yet intrigued me. I couldn't help but to stare at him because this boy looks like an angel. "Are you done" he says disturbing my thoughts. I cough and back up quickly. "Yes yes." He smiles which melts my heart instantly. I see his name tag, Ni-ki. "May we walk together" I blurt out without thinking. Ni-ki looks at me for a second and then slowly nods.
We began walking together, I notice he looks around like he's confused but doesn't want to show it. "Have you rode the bus to school?" I try to break the silence. He shakes his head. "What! How'd you get to school?" I said shocked. "I would ride my bike but it's currently broken right now" Ni-ki responds. I nod my head slowly, taking in this new information. I hear the sound of students, I can see the bus stop. As we got there we waited patiently. I look at Ni-ki and see him pulling out some headphones. "Whacha listening to" I say. Ni-ki looks at me and then pulls out his phone from his pocket. His phone screen turns on and I see "Billie Jean by Michael Jackson." I raise my eyebrow at him. He laughs and then he hits a Michael Jackson pose. We both burst out laughing, not caring about who's looking at us.
Back to the present...
Ever since then, Ni-ki stopped coming to school, then he showed back up one day in high school. We been in the same class since then but he has never spoke to me again, matter of fact I don't think he even remembers me. Every time he looks at me he just continues on. Now, graduation is around the corner, I still haven't gotten the courage to speak to him. However, I decided that I wont't avoid this. I am going to talk to him today! I storm from the girls bathroom to our classroom. There I see Ni-ki sitting at his desk with his head down. I gulp, nervous about the outcome. I storm over and knock on his desk. He lifts his head up and looks at me confused. "Hey do you remember me?" I say with low confidence but still trying to make it seem not awkward.
Ni-ki looks at me up and down. He has a look on his face that he might remember! He remembers me from middle school! I start smiling, this is the moment! "Oh you're our class president, Hana?" he says confused. Everyone in the class begins laughing. My smile fades as I look dumbfounded. "You don't remember me from middle school? I'm Haeun not Hana." Ni-ki head turns to the side. "I can barely remember middle school" he says and then puts his head back down. This is so humiliating! I turn around and walk out the classroom. I thought I left an impact on him like how he did with me. I guess not. How could he not remember me from middle school, I mean he barely remembered my name!
I was furious! I decided that from today on I would forget Ni-ki!
•••It's now graduation day, everyone smiling, happy to finally be done or happy to go to university. "Haeun!" I hear my name being called across the track field where everyone is taking their pictures. There waving was Sophie my best friend. Sophie's mom is Korean and her dad from America. She has pretty dark green eyes and blonde hair. Often was praised for her pale skin. She became one of the most popular girls in high school and started her own YouTube channel. She's gained about 50k subscribers and I know if she continued, she will definitely be something big. I smile at Sophie and run over to her. "We have to get a picture with our class!" Sophie says happily to me. I nod my head and she pulls me over to my classmates. "Class photo!" she yells. Everyone gathers around, I stand close to Sophie.
I felt a sudden brush against my other shoulder. I look and see Ni-ki standing right next to me. I immediately start to turn red. Oh my god he's right next to me! Ni-ki glanced at me in confusion. I quickly turn my head and fix my hair. I'm suppose to be mad at him right now. Everyone settles in and we all smile for our class photo. Sophie cheers when the pictures are over and looks towards me. She then notices Ni-ki next to me. "Haeun, do you think I should finally ask Ni-ki for his phone number?" Sophie whispers in my ear. Oh yea, I didn't mention. Sophie also likes Ni-ki, she's been liking him since he came back in high school. Funny thing is she doesn't even know that I like him! I never told Sophie ever...
"Go for it!" I say cheering her on but secretly sad inside. What if Ni-ki agrees and what if they end up becoming something more? I shake my head, trying to erase these thoughts. Ni-ki and me were never going to happen. I watch as she runs up to Ni-ki, cutely holding her phone out. Ni-ki looks at her for a second and then grabs her phone, he began typing. My heart sinks a bit, he's really giving his phone number. If only it was that easy. A sense of jealously came over me, however I couldn't be mad at Sophie.
This was the end of my first love.
