The sun was barely up when Emily arrived at the crash site again. The air was crisp, and the sky was soft with the colors of early morning. She parked her car and slowly walked toward the spot where the accident had happened. The road was quiet, almost peaceful, but it still carried the weight of what had taken place here. Emily scanned the area, her eyes searching for anything that could help. She wasn't sure what she was looking for, but there had to be something, some clue that had been missed. The grass near the road had grown a bit, and the bushes looked undisturbed. She crouched down and started to carefully inspect the area around the crash site. Her mind wandered as she worked. She thought about Daniel and the moments they had shared recently. How close they had become, how much she had started to care for him. But the shadow of his past always hung between them. That woman—whoever she was—had once meant everything to him. And now, Emily had to find her. As she moved a few branches aside, Emily spotted something. A small, worn-out leather wallet was half-buried in the dirt, almost hidden under some leaves. Her heart skipped a beat as she reached for it, hoping it might hold some answers. She opened the wallet carefully. Inside, there were only a few things: an old ID card, some faded receipts, and a photograph. Emily's breath caught as she looked at the photo. It was of Daniel, smiling next to a woman. She had long dark hair and warm eyes, and the way she looked at Daniel told Emily everything she needed to know. This was her. This was the woman from his past. Emily's hands shook as she held the photo. She stared at the woman's face, wondering who she was and where she had gone. There was no name, no address, nothing that could lead her to her. Just the image of a woman who had loved Daniel once, and maybe still did.
Later that day, Emily went back to the police station with the wallet. She hoped the ID card or the receipts might provide a clue. The officer she had spoken to before greeted her again. "I found this at the crash site," Emily said, holding out the wallet. "Do you think it could help?" The officer took the wallet and looked through it. "This is interesting," he said. "The photo might be helpful. We can run the ID card through our system and see if we can find anything." Emily waited anxiously as the officer worked. She couldn't shake the image of the woman from her mind. Who was she? And where had she gone after the accident? After what felt like hours, the officer returned. He had a serious look on his face. "The ID belongs to a woman named Sarah," he said. "But the address on file is old. We don't have any recent information on her. It's possible she moved away after the accident, or maybe she's just been hard to track down." Emily felt a pang of disappointment. Another dead end. But at least now she had a name—Sarah. It was something, a small piece of the puzzle. "Thank you," Emily said quietly as she left the station.
Back at home, Emily sat on her bed, staring at the photo of Daniel and Sarah. She knew what she had to do next. She had to find Sarah. The woman from Daniel's past wasn't just a memory—she was real, and she was out there somewhere.
