Weeks passed after that night, and Seungmin quietly distanced himself from the group. He stopped replying to their messages, stopped waiting for invitations that never came, and most importantly, he stopped trying to force himself into a place where he never truly belonged. Instead, he began to focus on himself, reaching out to new people, finding comfort in conversations with classmates he barely knew before. Slowly but surely, he formed connections that felt... genuine. His new friends weren’t flashy. They didn’t have grand plans every weekend or post group photos on social media, but when they said they’d meet up, they showed up. When they asked if he wanted to join, he knew they actually wanted him there. It was refreshing, and for the first time in a long time, Seungmin felt like he was seen—not as an afterthought, but as someone people actually wanted to be around.
At first, it was subtle—Seungmin missing from a few group outings, his replies shorter and less frequent so his old friends didn’t notice the shift. They were used to Seungmin being there when it was convenient, so his absence didn’t immediately register. But as days turned into weeks, they began to realize just how little they saw him anymore. The group, once inseparable, began to feel incomplete.
Felix was the first to voice his concern during lunch one day. “Has anyone heard from Seungmin?” he asked, his voice casual but tinged with worry.
The others—Hyunjin, Minho, Jeongin, Han, Changbin, and Bangchan—looked at each other. Han shrugged. “I texted him last weekend, but he said he was busy. Probably working on some school projects.”
“Busy?” Jeongin echoed, frowning. “Seungmin’s never too busy for us.”
Bangchan leaned back in his chair, his brow furrowed in thought. “It’s weird. He hasn’t been to any of our hangouts for a while now. Is something going on?”
Minho didn’t say anything, but he had noticed too. Seungmin had been quieter lately, more distant. And the more Minho thought about it, the more he realized just how many times they had left Seungmin out, either by accident or simply because it was easier to plan things without worrying about everyone.
That was the first sign that something was wrong, but they brushed it off. It wasn’t until a few more weeks passed, and Seungmin became a ghost in their lives—his seat at the lunch table empty, his absence in group chats glaring—that they started to worry.
One day, Felix decided to reach out directly. He called Seungmin, hoping to hear the familiar cheerful tone, but the call went unanswered. Later that evening, he sent a message, asking if everything was okay, if they had done something wrong. Seungmin replied, hours later, with a polite but distant response: “I’m fine, Felix. Just focusing on some other things.”
That was when they began to realize the gravity of their mistake. Slowly, painfully, the truth set in: Seungmin wasn’t “busy” or distracted—he was pulling away from them, deliberately.
The group tried to reach out more often, but every attempt felt hollow. They’d invite him to meet up, but Seungmin would decline, saying he had plans with other people. And he did. He’d found a new circle of friends, people who actually valued him and wanted his company.
One day, Felix spotted Seungmin sitting in the school courtyard, surrounded by his new friends. They were laughing and chatting, Seungmin right in the middle, his smile bright and genuine. This wasn’t the quiet, unsure Seungmin they had grown accustomed to leaving on the sidelines. This Seungmin was different—confident, comfortable, and happy. It was a sight that made Felix’s chest tighten with guilt. For so long, they’d taken him for granted, assuming Seungmin would always be there, even when they failed to make him feel included.
