My eyes flew open and I launched myself up out of the bedroll. I wasn't there. I wasn't there anymore. It was just a nightmare. They came so often and were so real that sometimes I felt the punches land. Felt the anger behind every word.
I tried to master my breathing into slow, deep breaths. It took a few minutes but soon I could see the trees around me, the stars shining bright in the clearing above me. I could hear the animals waking up for the day. I was free, I had gotten out. I'd been running ever since.
Was I really free?
~
It'd been two years since what had happened in my latest nightmare occurred. I don't know why the thoughts kept coming back. I'm sure they always would.
It was humid, oppressively sticky out in the forests of the west end of Tahrain mountains. I hadn't been in a village in days. I needed to. I was running low on food since I didn't carry much on me when I left the last small one I'd stopped in at. I couldn't even remember its name. But I had never stayed in any of them long. Never long enough to become known.
I hopped off the golden-haired mare I had stolen six months ago from some wealthy estate I'd passed by. I'd named her Swiftsilver. She could fly when we needed to run out of any situation quickly.
I'd be in the next village by midday if I made good time, hopefully I could find some form of work to be able to afford a few supplies for wherever life was to take me next. Or else I'd have to take it. I wouldn't stay long, couldn't stay long. I didn't need people to know me, it only resulted in regret.
