The footsteps echoed louder now, a steady march that reverberated through the safe house’s walls. Uzi, V, and N shared a tense glance, the argument momentarily forgotten as survival instincts kicked in.
V was already at the door, peeking out into the desolate landscape beyond. “He’s close, and judging by the sound, not alone. We need to move now.”
N nodded, his usual lighthearted demeanor replaced with grim determination. “We’ve got to find a way to throw him off. If we stay here, we’ll be cornered.”
Uzi’s visor flickered with static, her systems still not at 100%, but her resolve had returned. She grabbed her blaster, standing beside N. “No more running. We fight.”
V smirked, her confidence unwavering. “That’s more like it, Uzi.”
The trio rushed out of the safe house, moving with purpose toward the cover of a nearby industrial wreck. The sound of metal crunching underfoot and the low hum of distant drones filled the air. Uzi’s mind raced—she was still recovering, still struggling with her Absolute Solver powers, but she refused to let that stop her anymore.
As they reached the cover of a rusted-out drone factory, N spoke quietly. “We’ll need to draw them out, separate them somehow. If they’ve been tracking us, they know we’re here.”
Uzi scanned the area, her eyes catching a glint of movement in the distance. The figure—a dark, looming presence with glowing red eyes—emerged from the shadows, flanked by two other drones. His expression was cold and calculating, and his gaze landed squarely on Uzi.
“There you are,” the figure said, his voice chilling. “Uzi. The one who defied the Absolute Solver. You’re quite the anomaly.”
Uzi’s heart or whatever robots have pounded in her chest, but she forced herself to stay calm. “You’re not the first to come after me. And you won’t be the last.”
The figure smiled, an unsettling, hollow grin. “I don’t want to destroy you, Uzi. I want to study you. Your survival is… fascinating.”
N stepped forward, his body tense, ready to protect Uzi at all costs. “You’re not taking her. We won’t let you.”
V, ever sharp-tongued, readied her own blaster. “If you want her, you’ll have to go through us first.”
The figure tilted his head, his red eyes glowing brighter. “So be it.”
Without warning, the two drones at his side lunged forward. N and V reacted instantly, charging to meet the attackers head-on. The air exploded with the sound of clashing metal and blasts of energy. N’s twin blades gleamed as he parried the first drone’s attack, his movements fluid and precise, despite his injuries.
V unleashed her full arsenal, her disassembly drone programming kicking into overdrive as she deftly dismembered the second drone with a flurry of sharp, efficient strikes. Sparks flew as she slashed through the drone’s midsection, leaving it in a pile of broken parts.
Uzi stood her ground, watching N and V fight with practiced precision. Her hands twitched, the Absolute Solver within her stirring, calling for release. She could feel it—the power, the potential to obliterate any threat that came her way. But she was scared. Scared of losing control. Scared of becoming the monster she feared.
The figure watched her carefully, seemingly unfazed by the destruction of his drones. “You’re holding back, Uzi. Why? You could end this in a heartbeat.”
Uzi gritted her teeth, her visor flickering. “I’m not like you. I won’t lose myself to this.”
The figure’s smile widened, dark and menacing. “But you already have. You just haven’t accepted it yet.”
Suddenly, N let out a sharp cry of pain. Uzi’s head whipped around, her eyes widening as she saw N stumble backward, one of the drones landing a vicious blow to his side. Oil splattered the ground, his systems sparking. V quickly finished off the last drone, but it was too late—N was badly hurt.
“N!” Uzi shouted, rushing toward him.
He gritted his teeth, his usual smile strained as he looked at her. “I’m… fine. Just a scratch.”
But Uzi could see the damage. He wasn’t fine. Panic surged through her, mixing with anger, with desperation. She couldn’t let this happen. She wouldn’t let this happen.
The figure approached slowly, his eyes still locked on Uzi. “It’s inevitable. Use your power, or watch your friends die.”
Uzi’s hands trembled, the Absolute Solver surging within her, begging to be unleashed. She clenched her fists, her gaze snapping toward the figure, fury in her eyes. “I’m not afraid of you.”
She unleashed her power.
The ground beneath her cracked as her Absolute Solver abilities exploded outward. Tendrils of dark energy writhed from her body, her visor glowing a blinding white. The figure’s grin faltered for the first time as Uzi’s power washed over the battlefield, bending reality itself to her will.
V stepped back, her expression unreadable as she watched Uzi finally let go. The air vibrated with raw energy, and even the figure seemed momentarily taken aback.
Uzi’s voice was low, controlled, but filled with an intensity that made the ground tremble. “You’ll never take me.”
She raised her hand, and with a flick of her wrist, the figure was thrown backward, crashing into a wall with a deafening impact. He groaned, but quickly regained his composure, clearly intrigued rather than afraid.
But before Uzi could finish him off, N’s voice broke through her haze of power. “Uzi… don’t… don’t lose yourself to it.”
Uzi’s breath hitched, the tendrils of dark energy flickering as she hesitated. She looked at N—battered, injured, but still standing. Still fighting. For her.
The figure, still recovering from the blow, smiled darkly. “Interesting. Very interesting.”
But before he could make another move, V rushed forward, grabbing Uzi by the arm. “We need to go. Now.”
Reluctantly, Uzi let the power fade, her systems glitching slightly as she reined it back in. N stumbled over to her, leaning heavily on V for support.
As they made their escape, Uzi cast one last glance over her shoulder at the figure, her mind racing. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
But for now, they had survived.
Barely.
