Melissa woke up to the familiar hum of the farmhouse, the sun casting gentle rays through her window. She stretched out, savoring the warmth of her bed and the peace that had settled over her life in the Barton home. For the past few weeks, things had been remarkably calm, and she'd grown accustomed to the comforting routine of archery practice, family dinners, and quiet moments of reflection. But deep down, she knew this peace wouldn't last forever.
Today was different.
She dressed quickly, her mind already racing with anticipation and apprehension. As she made her way downstairs, she noticed the faint aroma of coffee and the soft chatter of Clint and Laura in the kitchen. The atmosphere was unusually tense, a stark contrast to the usual warmth of their morning routine.
"Morning," Melissa said as she entered the kitchen, her voice a touch louder than usual in an attempt to cut through the palpable tension.
"Morning, Mel," Laura replied with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She handed Melissa a mug of coffee. "You might need this."
Melissa took the mug, her fingers wrapping around the warm ceramic. "Thanks."
Clint looked up from his phone, his expression serious. "We need to talk."
Melissa's stomach knotted. "About what?"
Clint set his phone down, his gaze meeting Melissa's. "There's a new mission. One that's... pretty urgent."
"Urgent how?" Melissa asked, her heart quickening.
"Hydra's resurfaced," Clint said bluntly.
Melissa froze, the mug almost slipping from her hand. The name alone was enough to trigger a cascade of memories she had fought so hard to suppress. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "Hydra? I thought they were done for."
"So did we," Clint replied. "But apparently, they've been regrouping and have some sort of plan. Stark's got the details, but it's bad enough that he's called in the whole team."
Melissa nodded, setting her coffee down. "When do we leave?"
"Tomorrow morning," Clint said. "But I wanted to give you a heads-up now so you have time to prepare."
Melissa's mind raced as she tried to process the news. "I need to talk to Jessica. And Bucky. It's been a while since we've had a chance to catch up."
Clint's expression softened. "Of course. Take your time. Just... be ready."
That evening, Melissa found Jessica in the living room, engrossed in a book. She sat down beside her, her heart heavy. "Jess, I need to talk to you."
Jessica looked up, concern in her eyes. "What's going on?"
Melissa hesitated, then took a deep breath. "There's a new mission. Hydra's back, and I'm going."
Jessica closed her book, setting it aside. "Hydra? Again?"
"Yeah," Melissa said. "I can't avoid it. I need to face it head-on. I can't keep running from them."
Jessica moved closer, placing a comforting hand on Melissa's arm. "I understand that, but please, be careful. You've been through so much already."
"I know," Melissa said softly. "And I will. But I can't stay here and do nothing. I need to be out there, helping."
Jessica nodded, her eyes filled with concern. "Just promise me you'll stay safe. And remember, you don't have to do this alone."
