The air was thick with tension as Kael and Draven stood together, facing down the dragon that had cornered them. Draven's wings twitched in agitation, his form a mix of human and dragon—a sight that should have been terrifying but, to Kael, was comforting. His protector, his companion, his love.
The dragon that had pursued them growled, eyes narrowing. "You think you can fight me, Draven? You've always been weak, an outcast. This human has made you softer."
Draven's golden eyes flared with anger. "I'm stronger because of him. You've underestimated us both."
Without warning, the dragon lunged, its massive form barreling toward them with terrifying speed. Kael barely had time to react before Draven's wings spread wide, and in one swift motion, he lifted Kael into the air, carrying him out of the dragon's reach. They landed a few feet away, but the dragon was already charging again.
Draven let out a roar, his voice a mixture of human and dragon, shaking the cavern. He transformed fully, his body shifting into the massive, scaled beast Kael had grown to love, and met the attack head-on.
Kael's heart pounded in his chest as he watched the fierce battle unfold before him. Draven fought with everything he had, his movements precise and powerful, but the other dragon was relentless. Every strike Draven made was met with equal force, and the cavern trembled with the intensity of their struggle.
Kael felt helpless, standing on the sidelines, watching the love of his life fight for both their futures. He had no magic, no strength compared to these creatures. But he couldn't stand by and do nothing. His mind raced as he searched for a way to help.
Then, he saw it. The dragon's tail—covered in thick, black scales—was its weak point. Each time it attacked, the tail dragged slightly behind, exposed and vulnerable. Kael's pulse quickened with realization. He had to act.
Grabbing a jagged piece of stone from the cave floor, Kael darted toward the fray, his heart hammering in his chest. "Draven!" he shouted, drawing the dragon's attention for a split second. That was all he needed.
With a swift, precise movement, Kael threw the rock as hard as he could. It struck the dragon's tail, right in the weak spot he had spotted. The dragon let out a deafening screech, its body twisting in pain. It turned toward Kael, fury blazing in its eyes.
Draven took the opening. With a powerful swing of his tail, he knocked the dragon off its feet and lunged, his claws sinking into the enemy's throat. In one final, ferocious motion, Draven slammed the dragon into the ground, pinning it beneath his massive form.
The enemy let out a choked growl, its body limp and defeated. Draven's golden eyes glowed with fury as he loomed over the fallen dragon. "If you ever come near us again," Draven snarled, "you won't live to regret it."
The dragon whimpered, its defiance gone, and within moments, it disappeared into the shadows, slithering away like a wounded beast.
Kael let out a shaky breath, his legs trembling as the adrenaline wore off. Draven shifted back into his half-human form, rushing to Kael's side. "Are you okay?" Draven asked, his voice filled with concern as he gently cupped Kael's face.
"I'm fine," Kael replied, though his heart was still racing. "I couldn't just stand there and do nothing."
Draven's lips twitched into a small, affectionate smile. "You're braver than I could ever hope for."
Kael leaned into Draven's touch, the warmth of his hand grounding him. "I couldn't let them take you," he whispered. "I won't lose you."
Draven's gaze softened, and for a moment, they were lost in each other, the world around them fading away. "You'll never lose me," Draven promised, his voice low and steady. "We're in this together. Always."
