Chapter 5: Fractured Sile

The next morning, Isla awoke in the corner where she had spent the night, still aching from the previous day. The house was silent again, Elias having left for work. The oppressive quiet only deepened her sense of isolation. She lay in bed for hours, too fearful to move or speak.

As the day wore on, the gnawing hunger became impossible to ignore. Gritting her teeth, Isla forced herself to get up. Her movements were slow and cautious as she made her way to the kitchen. She rummaged through the cabinets, trying to find something to eat. Her hunger was compounded by the anxiety of the previous day, making the simple task of preparing food feel monumental.

When Elias finally returned from work, he immediately noticed the bruises on Isla’s body. His eyes narrowed, and he walked over to her, his expression unreadable. "Where did you get those?" he asked, his voice devoid of emotion.

Isla hesitated, her fear making it hard to find the right words. But she knew she had to answer. "It was... it was your father," she said quietly, her voice trembling. She explained what had happened, recounting the pain and fear she had felt the previous night.

Elias listened in silence, his face a mask of control. Though he didn’t show any outward reaction, Isla could sense a deep disapproval simmering beneath his calm exterior. The fear she felt towards Elias was different from what she had experienced with her father. Elias's anger was more contained, but no less intimidating.

Without a word, Elias walked past her, heading toward his father's room. Isla could hear their conversation through the walls, their voices rising in intensity. Elias was speaking with a forcefulness that suggested he was furious.

"I’m telling you, this can’t continue!" Elias’s voice was loud and fierce.

"You think you can control me with your threats?" his father roared back. "You’re out of line!"

The argument escalated, their voices blending into a chaotic mix of anger and defiance. Isla couldn’t make out every word, but the tension was palpable. Elias’s threats and his father’s counterarguments filled the house with a sense of impending confrontation.

The argument continued for what felt like an eternity, about 30 minutes in total. Finally, the door to the room slammed shut with a resounding bang. The noise echoed through the house, signaling the end of their heated exchange.

Isla remained in the kitchen, feeling more alone and unsettled than ever. The house, once a symbol of opulence and comfort, now felt like a battleground where fear and uncertainty ruled. She clutched the food she had managed to prepare, her appetite gone. The quiet that followed the argument was heavy and oppressive, and she was left with a lingering sense of dread about what might come next.

In the solitude of the kitchen, Isla grappled with the reality of her new life, wondering if she would ever find a place of safety and peace amid the chaos surrounding her.
